Trisquel 7 is supported for another 8 months, so you don't need to upgrade now if you're happy with T7 but will eventually have to get around to it.

First make sure that the packages 'trisquel' and 'trisquel-recommended' are installed. Several users have tried upgrading without 'trisquel' installed and ended up with a broken desktop environment. See here[1] if you're interested to understand why. I'd include 'trisquel-recommended' as well to be safe.
The terminal command to upgrade to Trisquel 8 is 'sudo do-release-upgrade'. If you'd prefer to do it graphically you may need to modify your Software & Updates settings so that T8 is detected when you check for updates. This page[2] explains how.

I mean how to upgrade the bootable image on the FSF membership card

Sorry, I should have read more carefully. I wasn't familiar with the membership card until now, but it appears to be a regular USB drive in the shape of a credit card. You should be able to install Trisquel 8 on it the same way[1] you would any other USB drive.
Great, thank you.
The image for the membership card is available on FSF/GNU servers
somewhere. It's slightly different from the regular image. The FSF
image boots up basically as a self-contained study suite for GNU
philosophy.
I found it http://mirror.fsf.org/membercard/ but it's too early for the Trisquel 8 iso
