fsf wireless adapters

Hello. I am very interested in free software & Trisquel, but first I need to be sure that, if I buy a wireless usb adapter support by a fully free operating system (http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/net/wireless/cards.html, or http://www.h-node.com/wifi/catalogue/en),
would it be as simple as plugging it in while running the Trisquel Live cd and it automatically working?
Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I need to be 100% sure.
Yes, as soon as you put it in your computer, as long as it is compatible with free drivers, it should automatically work in Trisquel.

There are few cards which need free firmware not installed by default,
atheros-firmware is one of packages with such firmware. The h-node page
should state if it's needed for the device.

It's a common problem, and not very easy one.
Some cards have multiple version numbers, each with different chipset or
free software support. Often it's not possible to learn which version a
card has without buying it. I recommend choosing a card knowing that
it's exactly the version needed or that there aren't cards of the same
name and possibly different version not supported by free software.
Thank you for your responses.
Do you know of any reliable sellers of free software compatible wireless usb adapter?
Also, unfortunately I do not have an access to an ethernet cable...
There are no sellers of exclusively free software compatible wireless usb adapters. It's best to find a USB adapter from h-node that you like and search for a good price on that one (on Amazon or elsewhere). However, MOST Atheros wireless-g and wireless-n cards will now work with Trisquel.
I've been searching on Amazon and others and haven't had any luck. I'll continue to look else though.
Thank you for the responses :)
Hi, I've got WG111 v2 (http://support.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2557) working with Trisquel 4.5 (also with live CD), rtl8187 is the module loaded by Trisquel.
If you like Amazon here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-Wg111v2-Driver-Extender-Cable/dp/B0024KN308
Bye!
I have this too. I will also confirm it works.
I got Netgear WG111v3 USB dongle. It works with Trisquel 4.0, but I didn't test it on the live CD (it might only work with the installed version). I actually used it in order to install updates which detected my internal Atheros wireless adapter.
For a while, zareason was offering Trisquel preinstalled on laptops that were fully free software compatible, but they don't seem to be doing that anymore.
I'm almost positive that Trisquel used to be one of the options in the dropdown list for preinstalled operating systems, though.

has a list
FYI
I use a D-Link DWL-122 USB dongle successfully'

Netgear WG111v3 USB dongle works fine using the live CD of Trisquel 4.0 (I just tested it at a friend's house).
Thanks, I'll have to check it out.
Mine works fine in 4.5 also. Picked one up at Bestbuy the other day.
Well, here I was thinking that my laptop wouldn't work. I have Ubuntu on it and my main PC went down. I just haven't felt like reinstalling to Trisquel due to time issues, but I decided to search and I see here that since I have an Atheros card it may work. I am already downloading the torrent again (old one locked on my main pc for now) to try the live CD. I hope it works.
Boooooo. It didn't work. Ubuntu states it is AR5001, but Trisquel AR242x. The driver is ath5k. Is that a free driver?
You might need to install updates if you aren't using Trisquel 4.5. I got my Atheros working in Trisquel 4.0 after installing updates. Here is the lspci -nnk:
Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR2427 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:002c] (rev 01)
Kernel driver in use: ath9k
Kernel modules: ath9k
I've never ordered from them, but they claim this wireless adapter is compatible with Trisquel. Penguin 802.11N USB Wireless Network Adapter /w GNU Linux Support
Great news, I got it to work! Seems that I can't use shared key, only open. :(
I am now running Trisquel on my laptop!
Good for you! :)
Netgreat WG111v3 does not connect to WEP networks on a live CD but connects fine after you install Trisquel.
Why would it work with one but not the other?
I managed to get it to work on the live CD (of 4.5). The problem is that after you enter the WEP password it asks for a different key that needs to be entered twice. The solution is to click cancel instead of entering random keys and then it works fine.
