GNU Guix can be used on top of a running Linux-based system, on i686 and x86_64, or using the virtual machine image.
GNU Guix is a purely functional package manager for the GNU system
In addition to standard package management features, Guix supports transactional upgrades and roll-backs, unprivileged package management, per-user profiles, and garbage collection

I'm confused as to what this does, and how it compares to, for example, apt.
But it looks very interesting. Does it compile packages from source, like portage?
