Hi all,

I have tried to install Google Earth on my system. The program installs fine, but when I try to launch it from the programs menu, nothing happens. Is this something normal that can't be fixed? or is there a way to get it to run.
I'm new to GNU/linux by the way and Trisquel is amongst the first distibutions I have tried, and is my favourite so far :)

Thanks in advance,

D.

Google Earth is proprietary, which means that it denies users the basic Four Freedoms of free software, described in:
http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

The Trisquel distribution and its community value these freedoms very heavily, so it is highly unlikely you'll find help with Google Earth here.

For a free alternative to Google Earth, you can try out KDE's Marble project: http://edu.kde.org/marble/ Marble is available through the GNOME Add/Remove Programs feature, which can be found in the Trisquel main menu.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case, wasn't too sure being a newbie n all. Will give Marble a go, I wasn't aware that there was a free alternative.

Thanks heaps,

D.

I notice there's another free alternative to Google Earth in Add/Remove Applications called Earth3d:

"Earth3D
Map client displaying a 3D model of the world
The map data is fetched from a server on the net, and the client will display recent satellite images and map data."

There is a browser plug-in enabling use of Google Earth, without installing the Google Earth application, but the plug-in is currently for Windows and Mac only. It's possible Google might make a version for GNU/Linux available.

In the meantime, using a browser with Google Maps (www.google.com/maps) and choosing Satellite View (top right), gives some similar functionality. Hit the F11 key for full screen.

Thanks for that, I got it sorted for what I wanted to do. I might look into Earth3D and check it out.
