Greetings ladies and gentlemen.

I've discovered the world of Doom mods and I've discovered how to use them with the magnificient "freedoom" data. Sadly, it seems that most of this mods seem to work only with zdoom and zdoom uses fmod wich seems to be... proprietary software? I don't quite know, it has a makefile and some headers but some files inside the tarbal are binary. Anyway, the license is/are reestrictive enough for not consider the program free software.

I want to ask you if there is an alternative to play zdoom wads using another engine or perhaps using the zdoom without the fmod library.

I've tried odamex wich seems to work on some of the wads but I would like to run my favourites.

ZDoom is under the original Doom license, which is proprietary in the first-place (it only allows non-commercial distribution). Some other Doom source ports are also under this proprietary license, so watch out for them.

As far as I know, Odamex is the best you can do for ZDoom compatibility, and incidentally also the best choice for multiplayer. Any ZDoom mods that don't work with Odamex, you'll just have to reject.

This is a nice list of Doom mods, if you haven't seen it; it tells you what engine each mod uses:

Also, a personal recommendation: Batman Doom. :)

Damn it, zdoom is proprietary, I've checked what you've said onpon4.

I've found out that zandronum is open-source under the Sleepycat license and it is based on zdoom and should work with most wads, the only problem is the sound: you can compile it with the non-sound option to avoid fmod.

Well, thank you and I will try Batman doom :-)

If I find more solutions to this inconvinience I will share them with you.

Cheers.

Zandronum isn't entirely under the Sleepycat license. Only new code developed for Zandronum is under that license. Parts from ZDoom would be under the Doom Source License still.
