Help me get rid of WhatsApp.

Greetings ladies and gentlemen:
I have Cyanogenmod and I want an alternative for WhatsApp that could be easy to set up because I have to convince my friends to also made the switch and you know it is very difficult to do so.
Thank you.
Telegram.
No doubt, just telegram, and a lot better that crappy crapsapp. You can download a desktop version, and it is portable. In telegram only encryption is propietary.
Ok, now telegram is on my list. But I want to hear about more alternatives because I heard that the server is proprietary.
I think that telegram has a function called "private chat", is means that you can chat device to device, not device-server-device. Not like crapsapp.
Use IRC?
very easy to setup
and just can host your own server or just use the freenode server if you don’t want to setup one yourself
and i don’t think you even need to register on freenode for most channels
Can we share media like photos in Conversations?

I know you can share files in irc and xmpp; not sure about tox or
telegram.

yes you can share files across IRC
Thank you, I think I will try to use Conversations with an IRC chanel or try XMPP, I will need some time to figure things up and try to convince my friends. I'm still listening for more alternatives though.
Converse.js?
https://conversejs.org/#page-top
I have some inconveniences with conversations, well, xmpp:
1 - I can share media but not in a room. (I'm using dukgo.com)
2 - If the user is not connected, the message send to that specific user is lost.
That are the only issues any solution? The most important thing to solve is the number 1.
You can use "secure chats" in telegram, which provide end-to-end encryption (you can't use this feature with the normal telegram client for gnu-linux, but there are other, un-official free software clients that allow you to use it on your desktop as well), then you don't have to worry about the server software for the sake of privacy.
Please also remember that it doesn't really matter if the server software is free or not unless you want to setup your own server.
If you use the server of some other guy, you give away the control over your data anyway, because he has control over the server (no matter if he claims to run this piece of free software on it or not).
Besides, telegram is awesome from a practicle point of view. It's far superior to whatsapp and i don't understand why everyone would still stick to the latter one.
neko.im is a nice jabber service aslackohere
just send a mail to name at domain with the desired username and you'll get the psswd in 2 minutes by mail :)
thank you very much :)

I set up a new account as name at domain and, since pidgin hasn't yet
said otherwise, I assume I'm connected? Account setup was quick and
painless. Thanks,
Dave

glad you like it. :)
You may wanna check this out,
https://blogs.fsfe.org/h2/2014/06/25/secure-texting-and-why-fsfe-cares/
In F-droid, I can't find text Secure, but SMS secure is suggested. I suppose it's one and the same.
So it's not actually SMS, but the same as What'sapp then?
I see there's an encryption option, just like Telegram.
But there's no warning on F-droid, unlike with Telegram (about that server thing).
I read the description and it definitly says that it will send SMS messages - no internet connection requiered.
So no, it's not textsecure.
I also wonder why textsecure doesn't show up in fdroid.
Does anyone have a solution?
ok i think the fsfe says that textsecure is still flawed because it needs some proprietary google lib, but they work towards solving this problem, and THEN textsecure will be a great whatsapp alternative.
So it's not there yet i guess...
Until then i will stick with telegram i guess, but i'm looking forward to making the switch.
I see, thanks quantumgravity.
Telegram is fine, though I'd love a setting that uses the encrypted communication by default.
I mean if we can encrypt, why use the unencrypted version?
The unencrypted version allows you to access all your chats and uploaded media on all your devices - they're like in a cloud.
If you use the encryption, the chats can only be accessed from the device that started the conversation.
So it's a matter of convenience i guess.
Thank you very much, now I have to make a difficult decision:
I've been trying conversations with a Jappix xmpp account and I've loved it but Kontalk seems very easy to setup specially for my non-tech friends...
Mmmm
