Hi everyone

Hello everyone I'm Nickman but you guys can call me Nick, this is my first post on the forum
I had heard of the FSF and free software and the first distro I was considering downloading was Linux Mint, followed by JULinux.
I've looked into all the distros on the FSF site and I think Trisquel is the best out of all of them, and I can actually find info on this site, the other distros either are not active, or I can't really navigate their websites the exceptions are probably Parabola and Dynebolic.
I'm big on privacy and finding distros that are 100% free and I'm very excited to learn more about all of them and how I could help.
I'm a young man in college majoring in Business Administration.
Once I get a new computer I plan on downloading Trisquel as a dual boot along with Window$ but I'm definitely considering buying a computer from thinkpenguin through the link on the site instead to help you guys out.
This will actually be my first time ever trying Linux so if you all were in my shoes what would you do dual boot or buy it pre-installed?
Thanks Calm, I hope to see more people putting their thoughts in as well.
Don't worry too much if you dual boot for school because you have to.
Right now the important thing is for you to learn. And try to do as much as you can on Trisquel.
You will find that you can do almost everything from it.
Also promote to others Free Softwore and teach them about why it is better to not use proprietary software.
You don't have to buy a laptop to dual boot you can dual boot now and i can put my hand on fire nothing will be lost (but do a backup just in case).
In case you need help with anything or want to share we are here :)
Also if you love games we have http://libregamenight.xyz/ join us on #lgn on IRC freenode we will play later =)
Thanks Alberto, I'm a big gamer, the reason I want to get a laptop as opposed to installing trisquel right now is because my parents use a lot of the computers I use and I wouldn't want to screw up what they do on the web. I'm thinking about installing it on a usb however, how would that work? Same as any other distro?
Also I have a question about Skype, does anyone on here contribute to Pidgin specifically working on a plugin for Skype? I talk to a friend of mine on Skype everyday, I'm not sure if Jitsi is reliable.
I think you both can use ring:
Part of GNU and available under multiple plataforms :) also respects your privacy and your freedom it is so much better than skype.
You can install trisquel on a USB, dowload this: https://rufus.akeo.ie/ (is for windows) and use it to create Trisquel live usb.
Now the fact that you install Trisquel alongside Windows won't affect the computer at all neither windows but it is okay if you rather wait for your own laptop :)
I actually have a USB flash drive that I got from my college. Would I put the files for trisquel onto the USB and then boot it up from the usb onto my parents laptop or would it work differently than if I created a USB installer?
I also have an old Toshiba laptop which I will put the specs up on a different post once my father gets back from work, he uses the laptop, but unfortunately he won't be back for a week, since he works in a different state.
I was about to indicate you https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb that explains how to create a live USB system (that can have, or not, persistent storage). However, the Wiki syntax is not interpreted (a current bug that will be fixed soon, I hope).
Removable devices are not made to support many write cycles. That is why I would not recommend a regular install on such a device: you would quite quickly kill it (e.g., /var/log's files are very frequently modified).
Thanks for clarifying Magic, would a external hard drive be killed if I did that or just flash drives? Flash drives are now off the table, it's either dual boot, vm, external hard drive or pre installed
Just flash drives. Actually, any flash media (also including SD cards, for example, and even to a lesser extent most SSDs). What Magic Banana refers to is that any given bit on flash media can only be changed so much before it becomes useless, so writing to flash media effectively brings it toward the end of its life. Constant writes happening all the time are the easiest way to make this happen quickly. Cheap flash drives are also more likely to not be designed very well with regard to this, since they're used just to transfer files, but I don't know that this actually happens in practice.
It's OK to put an OS on flash media (for small portable devices, this is even necessary), but you need to be aware of this limitation and should do some things to reduce the amount of writes that happen. In particular, you should not use a file system with journaling (use ext2 instead), and ideally you should disable logging as well. You also ought to not use swap, but if you do use swap, you should have a swap file that you turn on only when you need it (e.g. to hibernate).
By the way, this limitation of flash media is one reason why I never buy any flash storage device that costs more than around $20-30, and I always try to get the bare minimum that I need.
Ah okay, I never knew that onpon about constant writing making a flash drive useless, I'm aware that it does have limits, which is why I won't consider exploring that option further
Right, when you reach that limit, the device can't be used anymore, or at least can't be written to anymore. That's what I was referring to.
welcome!
waw I didn't know that were caddys for ssd trough the cd/DVD rom. Now I know!! Many thanks. I definitely will need one of those...
I guess that is what is free information, free world, free society.
Thanks a lot, again.
Thanks for the welcome SuperTramp and Heather, I'll be thinking about all these suggestions, any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
As far as I understand, Skype's proprietary protocol has not been reverse-engineered, so it is not possible to chat through that network without Skype. You'll have to use an alternative network (e.g. XMPP).
Nickman, first you should be commended for your interest in Free/Libre software and the willingness to place that interest on the table so to speak by actually using a distro that is committed to those freedoms. =)
As already mentioned, virtualization is a great option, although some people feel more comfortable dual booting in the beginning. Personally, the only way I use Windows (for one tax program that does not have a GNU version yet), is through virtual manager/kvm (virt-manager). I was a long time user of virtualbox, but when they started adding non free things to it, I began to explore other options.
Regarding GNU/Linux Mint, their security policy regarding updates is quite lacking, so I would not recommend it unless via LiveCD or virtual machine. thats my two cents.
HuangLao: which application is that? Let us try finding a decent alternative.
If I remember correctly it was the installer which had/has a nonfree component.
Onpon are you referring to Ring? I actually did not realize that
Huang thank you for the kind words, I've been considering dual booting and using trisquel for a semester in college (which lasts approximately 5 months) then reviewing trisquel after and deciding on whether to cut the cord on Window$ and install another 100% free Linux distro like Parabola in it's place or just use trisquel.
> Onpon are you referring to Ring?
No, XMPP is an IM protocol that Pidgin, Jitsi, and several others support, but not Ring. Ring is another perfectly valid option, though (I haven't tried it).
Ah okay, thanks for clarifying
Parabola is nice, just keep in mind that rolling release requires attention and care with regards to updates....always read the changelog on website (latest news section) first or you will be bitten sooner or later. I've been there and done that, bleeding edge is fun but as you get older LTS type distros become more appealing. lol
What year are you in for college?
I'm about to go into my 2nd year of college, I'm want to work on a cruise ship after I'm done
;)
I know a few people that work on cruise ships (Disney and Norwegian) and they like it alot.
What ever distro you decide to use (nod towards Trisquel), perhaps you could volunteer some time with Business Admin. tasks as well. I'm sure Ruben would appreciate it.
I'll get in touch with him about that, I want to get a part time job as well (which hopefully does not spread me too thin) to help pay for college
Agreed Calm, if skype was it's own thing instead of being owed for one of those two companies it would be great, open source would be even better :)
>Agreed Calm, if skype was it's own thing instead of being owed for one of those two companies it would be great, open source would be even better :)
I absolutely disagree with your statement. It makes absolutely no difference at all who owns a particular **proprietary** software. It makes it no better if I own it or if Mafia$oft or gooebles, as long as it is proprietary it is inherently unjust, inherently as bad as it can be.
I'm sorry SuperTramp it was late when I posted that so I wasn't really thinking about what I was saying.
What I meant to say is that if skype were it's own thing and all the proprietary software was kicked off of skype and replaced with free software that would be better.
Well, Nickman, I see your point, but skype is entirely proprietary - to "kick off of skype all the proprietary software" means erase skype. Skype was always proprietary.
Hi guys, sorry I haven't been posting on here, final exams for college, you know how it is lol. I'll provide some updates now
1. My friend (who I mentioned a few days earlier) is not interested in changing from skype to a free software, I wish I could convince her.
2. The Toshiba laptop I brought up on the thread about a week ago is not currently here, my father forgot it at his work in North Carolina, so there goes that idea, I plan on getting a external hard drive and using trisquel, if I get a laptop for Christmas that's even better so I could use it on my new computer, which I will make a separate thread regarding the specs. So now it's not the question of if I'll use trisquel, it's now a question of when I'll start using trisquel which hopefully is before the end of the year.
Just create a room (in one click) in http://vroom.im or in https://meet.jit.si and send the link to your friend (who will change from Skype to free software without knowing it).
Thanks Magic
Hi and welcome!
I'm a free/libre software activist from Brazil (since the end of 2015)
and a student of the movement since high school days (from 2012).
I'm currently alos studying to get a bachelor's degree on organization
management (also known as: busniess administration/management).
Perhaps we can share some findings and observations?
I'm currently making a huge update to my public collection of favorite
articles (about free/libre software, organization management, politics,
philosophy, economics (resource scarcity approach), accounting, and
relations between all of these), but feel free to ask me for a list of
references related to any specific subject in relation to free/libre
software.
Respectfully, Adonay.

Sure Adony we could share some observations
My advice would be
1. Definitely go preinstalled, way less hassle because everything "just works"
2. Avoid dual booting if at all possible, or have windows on a completely separate machine from your gnu/linux one.
3. Definitely run a FSF recommended distro or at worst, Debian. Why? Because the other distros don't really care much for freedom.
4. For privacy Parabola maintains a repo of privacy conscious free software. I don't think I've come across that on trisquel, but either way a side effect of free software is that it doesn't spy on you by design. 10/10 good stuff.
5. Absolutely avoid Skype. Privacy nightmare (you basically have Microsoft listening in to everything you say, do or film). Check out Riot, Ring or qTox.
6. If you must use Windows on your machine that is otherwise free software VM it in QEMU.
I think the problem I might have with parabola is that it is a rolling release and it'd be a bit scary for me to use on my new computer and accidentally break it.
I unfortunately was not able to get a pre installed computer, but I created a topic a little while back called New computer specs, that's where you can find out about my new computer.
I'll look into those other programs instead of skype
On the subject of Skype, jitsi.meet sounds like a good idea until you realize you need a really fast connection (optic fibre is recommended). However, some Skype-Windows users have told me there’s no fluid stream either with Skype. But it’s Skype, so who would dare to complaint or even dream of complaining?
But the worst thing about Jisti.meet is this:
Type in your terminal:
$ dig NS meet.jit.si
and you get:
;; ANSWER SECTION:
meet.jit.si. 1195 IN CNAME meetjitsi-elb.hip-chat.name.
meetjitsi-elb.hip-chat.name. 228 IN CNAME meetjitsi-allregions.hip-chat.name.
;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
hip-chat.name. 828 IN SOA ns-1566.awsdns-03.co.uk. awsdns-hostmaster.amazon.com. 1 7200 900 1209600 86400
However, the good news is there’s another instance of Jitsi.meet that you can use without any fear of being betrayed to Amazon: https://framatalk.org/
(server run by a nonprofit in France, open to anyone).
It’s easier for people than install Jitsi (that runs on Java, unfortunately).
The problem is libre software isn’t enough with GAFAM everywhere (Google, Amazon, etc.), you need to trust the servers you’re in touch with. As for me, I don’t trust any CDN companies or CloudFlare, but I may be wrong.
"jitsi.meet sounds like a good idea until you realize you need a really fast connection (optic fibre is recommended)."
My experience testing it (and Palava.tv) is that it definitely doesn't work without a fast PC, and fast internet. Now that I have some more powerful hardware, and fibre to the door, I'm keen to give it another go.
But if you just want voice chat, I highly recommend Mumble. I've used it for conference calls with a web dev team of 5 and it worked really nicely, even on my poor old network (click on my username to see the specs) on a DSL broadband internet over copper. It has clients for most platforms (certainly all the currently popular ones). I haven't tried running a server though, I just found a gratis one to use.
Has anyone tried GNU Ring? It's a P2P voice (and video?) chat app that recently joined the GNU project.
I tried GNU Ring a little while ago. Even though it is still in beta according to ring.cx, it works fine. Well, it did for me, at least. You should give it a go if you can.
I know Jitsi from the time when I was still at Ubuntu. After reading this thread, I decided to try it againt, so I went to Add/Remove Applications menu from Trisquel 7, found Jitsi, and installed it right away... version 2.4.4997 from year 2013.
The network list is: AIM, Facebook, Google Talk, ICQ, ippi, iptel.org, MSN, SIPP, XMPP, Yahoo! Obviously there are some obsolete things here... since the year 2013 MSN and Facebook have closed their XMPP service and Yahoo! and Google have underwent changes (alas the times when I could access all my accounts at Facebook, Google, MSN, Skype and Yahoo! through Pidgin are gone).. The results:
-Facebook: "invalid password" error even though it is right.
-Google Talk account A: Shows status "Available" but no contacts.
-Google Talk account B: "invalid password" error even though it is right.
-MSN: Shows status "Offline" and there's no way to get it Online.
-SIPP: Apparently, it works... the account is accepted and shown with online status, but cannot test it because I have no correspondants with SIP.
-XMPP@facebook: Connection error
-XMPP@google account A: Long wait, then nothing.
-XMPP@google account B: "invalid password" error even though it is right.
name at domain: "invalid password" error even though it is right.
-Yahoo! : Long wait, then nothing.
About Jitsi from Trisquel, perhaps we can package it to Guix, so that
people with Trisquel can also test Guix, and an updated Jitsi.
I'm not making promises though, this is just an idea.
