How much does Trisquel benefit from being a Ubuntu based distro?

There are meant to be very large numbers of developers working on Ubuntu. How much is Trisquel able to benefit from that? What are the developers that work specifically on Trisquel generally trying to do most of the time?

By the way, gNewSense is also a Linux-libre Ubuntu based distro. What is the difference between gNewSense and Trisquel?

Thank you!

Trisquel is 90% Ubuntu. Trisquel devs deal (almost?) exclusively with freedom issues.

gNewSense was based on Ubuntu but the next version will be based on Debian. Trisquel was originally (in <2.0 versions) based on Debian but is since based on Ubuntu. Trisquel has a much newer release at the moment.

:) Trisquel always has a newer release. I'm actually pretty amazed gNewSense is still around. I'm not sure why one would run this distribution over Trisquel. Maybe geek cred or something? It's a lot more work and the security issues would concern me. I can see some advantages in other distributions with recent releases in comparison to Trisquel though. Particularly where they are targeting a particular audience.

gNewSense was the project which got the ball rolling for a truly free distribution.

I believe gNewSense also has a version or there is a derivative of it that works on ARM. Maybe that is an advantage compared to Trisquel which is only for x86.

Because gNewSense has a MIPS(el) port and can be used on the Lemote
Yeeloong laptop. That is what RMS uses, because it works with free
software and has no non-free BIOS. I think that in the
unstable/development version of gNewSense the only officially supported
architecture is MIPS(el).

Trisquel uses Ubuntu's packages as a base and select some to create the default installation images. There is quite some technical work and not only "freedom issues" (and "freedom issues" lead to more technical work, such as Abrowser, which is specific to Trisquel).

I also thought that about abrowser until somebody pointed me to http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=abrowser

I realize the add-on handling is different on Trisquel.
