Hello. I have an H.P. Deskjet F4140 "All-In-One" that is not recognized by either Xsane, SimpleScan, or HPLIP Toolbox. "System/Admin/Printing" does recognize it, and it will print documents. The scanner function does not work. Any ideas? I'm running Dagda. Thanks for your time!

The H.P. Deskjet F4140 is not fully supported under GNU/Linux and this is probably your problem. While HP is the best brand to go with the printer choice was not. At a minimum it has reduced print quality and/or print speed in GNU/Linux.

That being said you can try this:

Remove the printer and try installing the hplip-gui utility. This may resolve the problem with being unable to scan. Make sure you use the hplip-gui to add the printer again.

Hello Chris! Thanks for the reply. I've never had a problem with the F4140 when using several GNU/Linux distros in the past. I'm trying it now on Trisquel 4.5 and it works perfectly. There must be something missing in 5.0 for it not to work there. I shall keep trying!

If I understand correctly HPLIP recommends non-free software (you can download a non-free optional driver using HPLIP which works with several printers) so the new version that was released a week ago in Dagda no longer does that. Unfortunately, my printer's scanner doesn't work with the the new version via simple scan or XSane (even though my model - psc 1215 - doesn't require any non-free software according to HP's website) so I simply downgraded.

That is concerning. Have you got any idea how this can be resolved without downgrading?

No idea sorry. The previous version was automatically installed by Trisquel when I selected my printer model and just worked.

Well, I downgraded my OS to 4.5, and all is well with my F4140. Scanner works, HPLIP toolbox works. Perhaps I misunderstood, but I don't see how HPLIP could recommend non-free software in this free version of GNU/Linux. Wouldn't the Trisquel developers remove HPLIP if that were so? Would this make 4.5 less free than 5.0?

Recommending non-free software doesn't turn a free program un-free. For example lets say I write a free program under the GPL and in the welcome message I put "You should go download adobe flash!!" that doesn't make my program un-free. It just means my program does something that we consider bad.

More then likely if that were true (I haven't verified) we would modify the program to remove the reference. For example abrowser is basically a modified version of firefox. The add-on section has been modified to use our add-on repo because the default firefox one recommends non-free software.

What is interesting here is these printers should be working from the looks of it. They aren't dependent on anything that is non-free. It appears whatever changed may not be specific to a particular HP printer. We should try and figure out what the problem is and fix it.

Well, if ever there is a fix for this, I'll upgrade to 5.0! Happy New Year!
