Introducing myself + question about a wifi adapter ( if its libre or not )

Hi!
Greetings from Norway :) Christmas is coming and my christmas precent to myself is a new jensen 100ac usb wifi adapter and a fresh install of trisquel on my Macbook Pro 13 mid 2012. I installed powertop too, havent changed any of the settings there yet, but it actually seems to work completely flawless :+1: But no ethernet, but too hell with ethernet. No multitouch, but I guess I am just a package away for adding that.
Is the Jensen Scandinavia Air:Link 100AC driver a free as in libre driver? I downloaded the source and had to compile it myself and modprobe the driver (did not actually test it without the explicit install). As a developer I know whats source and there was c files and header files there, but my fear is that it might be "open source" and not libre. Any input on this? Have I violated my trisquel installed already?
Hope not :( 8)
Cheers
There was no license in the driver zip. Thats wierd. I think all software that you get as a zip file should contain the license. But actually, if they are providing the source, I can change the source before I compile (to my own liking because it doesnt work or something). With no license provided in the zip they cant deny me that. Or can they? Can a license on the website overrule the fact that the downloaded zip does not contain a license?
You have it backwards. A license provides an exemption to copyright; without it, you have no rights at all by default, until it falls into the public domain (which will not be until long after your children are dead). See:

Ok. Until I get a new dongle that is correctly licensed, ill just have to stick with this jensen stuff. But it was as I initially feared. The dongle was just like the other dongles, not free. But thanks for the correction. I am not actually working with licenses at all in development, other than very particular pieces of software that is crucial to our inhouse products. Luckily I can just uninstall the firmware when I find a libre dongle.

Welcome, jarlandre. There is no free 802.11ac firmware at this time. You'll need to stick to a/b/g/n stuff in order to use free software.
Ill try to find some other dongle to use that has free drivers. But, another question. All software in the add/remove software in trisquel is verified free software? I saw KeePass2 there, and ive heard that its not preferred over keepassx because of mono stuff (i might be incorrect here, not double checking sources before posting this)? Are there certain software in the software manager that is not 100% free?
Mono raises issues of software patents which is a different but somewhat overlapping issue to software freedom. This would be good to listen to if you want to hear more on that topic: https://www.softwarefreedom.org/podcast/2009/jul/07/0x11/
The software manager connects to the Trisquel repositories, which are all
completely free software. The software manager would not be included if it
had non-free software in it. I don't know what the situation with KeePass2
is. The program must have been judged to be free software.
