I would like to install Freemind, a free mind-mapping application.

Freemind works with Java. I looked "Java platform" up on Wikipedia; I learned that it is proprietary freeware.

Freemind is free ... but I don't understand how to install it and still have a free system.

I'm probably misunderstanding something here. Could someone explain this to me?

The regular Java runtime environment and development kit distributed by Oracle (previously Sun before it was acquired by Oracle) is nonfree. You shouldn't use that. However, there is a free implementation of Java called OpenJDK; that's what you want. It can be found in Trisquel's repos.

In other words, just install Freemind.

You can use e.g.

*the synaptic package manager
*add/remove software (not recommended)
*apt-get
*aptitude
*dpkg

to do so.

ALT + F2
and then type:
"synaptic-pkexec"
then enter user password when prompted,
in synaptic click on search icon and type
"freemind"
mark it for installation and it will be there.

Cool, thanks guys.

How come I should avoid the add/remove programs application? I used add/remove to install a few applications before I read your warning not to use it =/ ... should I be worried?

I'll use the alternative ways from now on.

I don't think it's dangerous, just impotent. That's what I heard anyways. Never used it myself.

It's not particularly bad, but it sometimes fails at removing things, and it doesn't display everything (only graphical applications). Synaptic is often better.
