The ROMs are non-free, but considering this a legacy gaming preservation project for historical reasons, I could make an exception (and some old games have its company long defunct, so getting the source code is literally impossible).

That's a good reason to make the ROMs free. We must demand it.

Sadly the older ones with the bankrupted company are under oblivion, and the alive ones are exploited ad eternam from companies like Activision.

Gaelco released a ROM but under a non-commercial license. At least they could ship the sources for the binary code without the sprites, but not :(
