Hi I Want to migrate to trisquel from ubuntu, could someone help me with this?
Also, is Trisquel now still based off of ubuntu?
Does this work without a trisquel counterpart?
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/migrate-ubuntu-trisquel-without-reinstalling
Hi! welcome! fresh install is always the best thing to do if you have time and patience.
that being said, the answers are yes and yes. BACKUP your data before running the script!!!
cheers!
Thanks! wish me luck
so thats a total conversion to trisquel?
I am using Ubuntu 14.10 what variables would I change in the script?
and will it not work because 14.04 is the counterpart unless i downgrade
If it works, it will break your system and/or put it at risk. You'll end up with newer versions of packages than will ever be in the Trisquel repo (preventing you from getting security updates), dependencies will be broken, etc. As the wiki page mentions, you should only use that script on a system that actually has a Trisquel counterpart (so, the LTS releases; 12.04 for Trisquel 6, 14.04 for Trisquel 7).
onpon is right - I didn't consider the possibility of you having the 14.10 version!!
Don't do that - fresh install is required!
I downloaded UNetBootin, but how do you run it from trisquel?
what did you download
if its a .deb file from the internet i don't recommend running it
compiling it from source would be the best idea you can find
unetbootin source here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/files/UNetbootin/608/unetbootin-linux-608/download?use_mirror=softlayer-ams
also i made a fork of unetbootin that changes the
non-free distro list to a libre distro list which you can get here:
http://92.19.232.58:82/code/html/unetbootin_libre.html
if you need help compiling it from source its quite easy so feel free to ask
If cinnamon cannot install a .deb package, I very much doubt he (she?) can compile from source without any instruction!
@cinnamon: forget about unetbootin and follow https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/installation-guide
Thanks magic banana. Yeah Building the source would not have been an option, but I ended up just doing a dd command.
Thanks. I installed trisquel eventually but I will look into that
if you want a tutorial of compiling unetbootin from source(works with both versions i listed)
i made a video here:
http://92.19.232.58:82/files/Compiling_unetbootin_from_source.ogv
Herer is a little script I used to use for running unetbootin from the terminal; If I don't want persistent space, I just use the 'dd' command to write to my usb drives.
The script prompts user for path to iso image, path to usb drive, and time to wait for the action to complete. It assumes unetbootin is in your command search path; e. g. you installed it from a ppa. Modify it as needed, and enjoy!
Cheers,
Dave
@Dave_Hunt I don't see a script. Did you forget to attach it?
Thanks dave. I didn't see the script but I eventually solved it using dd.. assortment of tutorials. maybe I can try to document how I did so when I have more time.
Maybe I did forget to attach, or it was rejected? It seems a moot point, now, anyway, thanks for the follow-up comments. If there is continued interest, I'll try again, or paste script into a forum message (note: the browser may wrap in strange ways). :) Anyway, since learning of the 'dd' command, I haven't used unetbootin.
