new install problem with display

I just downloaded and installed it. But
my first problem is:
the display shows 640x480 and i cannot change
this resolution. says "monitor unknown"
I have an ACER monitor and have not had this
problem on any other OS.
how do i fix it?

The problem certainly deals with the video card rather than the monitor. Let me guess: AMD? Executing 'lspci' in a terminal would tell. If you have an Intel processor that integrates a graphical chipset, use it.
