New Mozilla-based browser add on that is similar to the old FlashVideoReplacer.

The source code is on GitHub, but I'm not sure about the license. I'm actually a Parabola GNU/Linux-libre user, but I thought it would be worth mentioning here as well. The add on is called NoFlash: http://www.figuiere.net/hub/blog/?2014/06/04/849-hack-the-web-no-flash There is no information about a license, though, so it might be worth contacting the author.

*Sorry, just checked the actual add on page, and it is under the Mozilla Public License 2.0

Could you describe this add-on in more details on that page of the (Wiki) documentation: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/play-videos-without-using-flash

In particular how does it compare to Youtube All HTML5? I guess it works on more websites and does not require Greasemonkey. But does it work reliably on as many websites as Linterna Mágica or ViewTube?

Sorry about being a bit off-topic Ben but how Stable/unstable is Parabola and how often does it break, if it does break often, and what kind of breakage would that usually be?

Anyway, I might opt to stay with ViewTube for now. It's not that pretty but it can do quite a few things.

I plan to install Parabola when I get time (I already have it on a VM). I don't know how often it breaks, but there are a lot of things that require manual intervention.

No problem, sorry I just had time to respond. Anyway, my experience with Parabola has been that it's *fairly* stable, insofar as giving you a working base system. Every now and then, an update will break a package (not a necessary one, maybe an emulator or game, something like that). The only major issue I've had is getting Pulse Audio working in KDE; following the Arch Wiki, I did get it sorted out, only to have it break again when an update was pushed. Basically, if Arch is stable enough to your liking, Parabola will be as well. If Arch isn't, it's probably better to stick with a different distro.

Really, the issue with Parabola is the install process. It is the same as the Arch install, which is off putting to some, although really not that bad (you can do a full install in under half an hour, easy), and they actually have simplified the Arch install guide quite a bit on the Parabola website. I'm hoping Manjaro will consider doing an FSF compliant spin based on Parabola down the line, hard to say really.

"I'm hoping Manjaro will consider doing an FSF compliant spin based on Parabola down the line"

I second that - MAnjaro was easily "stable enough" during the time it spent as my last not-so-free tenure with GNU/Linux. Would've stayed there had it had a fully free variant.

I think there's some confusion about this extension being expressed. No Flash is not like ViewTube or Linterna Magica. ViewTube and Linerna Magica replace the official video players of various video hosts with an unofficial free/libre one. No Flash does something completely different; it replaces the dated Flash-based YouTube and Vimeo embeddings with the newer official HTML5-based embeddings. Incidentally, ViewTube doesn't affect embedded videos at all, so the jobs of ViewTube and No Flash don't overlap anywhere.

Basically, No Flash is a compliment to YouTube All HTML5: YouTube All HTML5 works on the YouTube and Vimeo sites themselves, while No Flash works on embedded videos. (I don't think YouTube All HTML5 works on embeddings; I could be wrong, though, especially considering I don't use it.)

"ViewTube doesn't affect embedded videos at all"

Ah, I completely forgot about that part! I'll probably reverse my decision then.

onpon4 is 100% correct in his assessment, this will just act as a complementary add on to your others, such as View Tube and YouTube All HTML5. Also, I think he pretty well summed up everything for the wiki, I don't know of anything else to add. Many thanks for that as well, by the way.

Another option is replacing embedded videos with a link which the LinkTube Greasemonkey user script does:
You can get it here (it requires Greasemonkey or Scriptish to work):
http://isebaro.com/linktube/?ln=en
http://isebaro.com/linktube/include/files/linktube.user.js
Greasemonkey:

Scriptish:
