New ReTux Release and a Level Making Competition

This is the announcement for the new release of ReTux:
https://savannah.nongnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=8550
And this is the announcement for the level making competition I'm running:
https://savannah.nongnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=8551
So, a lot of stuff: a new beta (which should be the last beta), a gratis demo version, a level editing guide, and a level making contest. The contest includes prize money for the winners as a little incentive to participate. :)
I would like to find some additional judges for this contest if possible, so if anyone here is uninterested in entering the contest but would be interested in helping me judge entries, please let me know. :)
Oh, this'll be fun!
Hopefully it'll bring over some good levels for that Bonus Set!
Well, that's an unfortunately quiet response I've had so far. I do hope some people participate!
I was trying to be quiet until I'd looked into this more but since you are disappointed I will break the silence and say that I may make some. I made a bunch of levels for KGoldrunner (https://jxself.org/git/?p=kxp.git) and it might be nice to try a different game. No promises though because I haven't yet examined things in sufficient detail just yet.
As disappointing as it would be, I have to admit, it would be insanely funny if you submitted the only 5 entries and won the entire $100 by default (which is what would happen in that event since there isn't a minimum participant requirement).
Just to let you know, I am working on a level. Hopefully have it ready for the deadline.
I've decided to make a trailer of sorts for ReTux splicing together some clips that show what ReTux is about, probably with the Salsa Con Carne music. So I've recorded a video of most of the game with the music off. Now I just need to select some clips to splice together...
Out of curiosity, does anyone who either has played the game or seen the existing videos know of things in particular that ought to be shown in the trailer? Things that, if you saw them, would get your attention and make you want to try the game out? I'm sure I can find enough clips on my own, but some feedback on what to focus on would help me produce a better trailer.
Alright, I've finished a trailer:
https://goblinrefuge.com/mediagoblin/u/onpon4/m/retux-trailer/
I'd appreciate any feedback on what's shown here. I might make an improved version with a better selection of clips.
Also edited http://retux.nongnu.org to list some of ReTux's particular distinctions (the same ones the IGG campaign listed). I'd appreciate feedback on that as well (especially regarding anything I missed).
I like it. Lots of action. Maybe a small amount more at the beginning about the motivation behind the story and why Tux is trying to put an end to the Snow King's reign? It's the only suggestion I've got.
I will make a level to participate on the level contest.
I have never participated and I am not a programmer but I think it will be fun =)
Awesome! I've sent you a response to the email you sent. :)
For the record, no programming is required to create levels. (You can do some scripting if you want to, but you don't have to.)
I was going to wait until tomorrow to post this announcement, but since someone has already done something that involves the change, I've posted it now:
https://savannah.nongnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=8558
Three things:
First, a small bugfix release of ReTux is now available. This should make it possible to run ReTux if you don't have Tkinter installed.
Second, and this might sadden some people, I have decided to pull the demo version. It's been almost a week since I released that version, and I don't feel like it's generating any substantial interest. Plus, it's either a maintenance burden or a stain on ReTux's reputation; for example, to avoid leaving that Tkinter-related bug in the demo, I would have had to update it the same time I updated the full release.
But third, I have decided that I am going to give gratis copies of ReTux to anyone who announces that they are going to participate in the level making competition before June 20. albertoefg is the first person to get this. I hope this limited-time offer will encourage more people to participate and make it possible for people who couldn't pay the normal $10 price to get ReTux.
It is really funny!!
I played it with python3 (i already had pygame for python3) and I've played a little bit and it is great, really fast and dynamic.
I've never played mario that much so I rather play your game =)
I will try to make a good level for the contest
I'm glad you like it. :) Looking forward to your entry!
This looks fun, yet the manual for level making is a bit overwhelming to me.
Basically, I need to get Tiled, the game or the game demo, and get a specific file from the game that I can modify with Tiled? I didn't read it all, but it seems there is much more to it.
It's really not that difficult to do once you get your head around it. I was able to show my younger brother (who is in grade school) how to make basic levels. The level editing guide might seem a little intimidating because it's very thorough.
But these are the rough basics:
- Use tilesets (like "snow") purely for visuals. They have no real effect; they just define how the level looks.
- Objects are found on special "tilesets", like the "creatures" tileset. Just place them wherever you want them to go in one of the various object layers other than "solid".
- Draw rectangles in the "solid" layer to make solid collisions (floors, walls, and ceilings), after you have placed the tiles that are supposed to represent these things.
That knowledge alone is enough to get a basic level done, without things like unisolid tiles, slopes, moving platforms, and warps. But I don't want people to be so limited in what they do, so the level editor guide goes into more detail than that. :)
Hi man, i will participate, and i'll send my email
Great to hear! I've sent you an email with the password.
A couple days late due to the Goblin Refuge's uploads not working correctly, but here's a quick update in video form:
https://goblinrefuge.com/mediagoblin/u/onpon4/m/retux-cds-have-arrived/
Oh, cool!
I'll have to order one!
Another ReTux release, this one making some small tweaks:
https://savannah.nongnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=8579
Less than a week left to get a gratis copy for participating in the level making contest! If anyone else who doesn't have a copy of ReTux already is interested in participating, you should announce your participation soon. :)
Just a reminder: this is the last day to get a copy of ReTux without charge by announcing participation in the level making contest.
If I could assist in any way, let me know. I'd probably do better as a judge than a level-maker. Although I do remember lode runner from the 1980s (a fact that really dates me!), I'm more of chess/Go type of game player. Still, I could spare some time if it would help you.
Don't forget: entries to the contest are due tonight. Make sure you send your entries to name at domain by then. :)
Well, this is embarrassing. Only one person sent a level in. Ironically, that one person wasn't even able to get Tiled to work on her system; she had to construct her level in an image editor.
I'm extending the deadline to July 4. albertoefg, sietefire: I hope you can send a level in by then. :)
Thank god you extended the deadline.
I haven't even started yet-- I'll have a late night tonight, huh?
Still only one submission...
Man, this is the most disappointing thing since the ending to Dexter. The only submitted level isn't even any good (because its author didn't have the proper tools for making it and rushed to get it done); my rating for it is 2/100.
Well, I'll cut one more deal: I ended up starting a Japanese translation of ReTux's text, so I'm going to finish that before I finalize the results of the contest. I will accept entries until the morning after that translation gets finished (it shouldn't take long; 1-7 days depending on how busy I am).
If no one submits anything by then, the only entrant who submitted anything (MECHDRAGON777) will win by default. Her level definitely won't be included in ReTux; it's just not any good. But she will still win the $50 prize in that case, because a winner is a winner, default or not.
Sorry so few people have submitted i will try to make one tonight but you could get a lot more submissions if you extended the deadline a few days and advertised the competition on a few forums.
here are a few active forum websites where i think there will be people that want to enter the competition:
http://forums.devshed.com/game-development-141/
http://www.html5gamedevs.com/forum/12-general-talk/
http://www.gamedev.net/index
http://www.graalians.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=44
http://gbdev.gg8.se/forums/
https://forum.minetest.net/viewforum.php?f=17 (this is the off topic Minetest forum lots of people go on here but you must be logged in to use it)
and any others you can think of
also agreed the ending to Dexter was terrible!
I think it's a bit too late to be advertising the competition at this point, and I already extended the deadline by a few days. I can't leave the 1.0 release of ReTux in limbo forever, especially not for something as insignificant as this.
On a side note, I think it would be massively inappropriate to advertise anything to do with ReTux on any of those forums other than gamedev.net (where I already posted about it). It's completely off-topic and I don't even have an active presence on any of them (though I was previously active on the Minetest forums).
"On a side note, I think it would be massively inappropriate to advertise anything to do with ReTux on any of those forums other than gamedev.net"
why those forums are for game development (with the exception of minetest and gbdev of which you should use the off topic fourm) as this is a competition in game development would it not be relevant?
also do you know where i could get the tilemap for supertux/retux for use with tiled?
> why those forums are for game development (with the exception of minetest and gbdev of which you should use the off topic fourm) as this is a competition in game development would it not be relevant?
Some of them are about very specific games, one is about HTML5 (JavaScript) games, one is for Gameboy games and sorry, I slightly misspoke: that first one just has so few people that it wouldn't be worthwhile.
> also do you know where i could get the tilemap for supertux/retux for use with tiled?
I'm not sure what you mean by "tilemap". If you mean the tilesets, they're included with ReTux and data/levels/base.tmx has them all included already.
Small announcement:
I have just finished the Japanese translation, so I will stop accepting submissions tomorrow and publish my judgments of the submitted levels shortly thereafter. So if you are working on a level, be sure to wrap it up and send it in by then.
The winners (currently all participants, since there are only three) will then be sent the prizes, and version 1.0 of ReTux will be released.
Contest results:
ReTux 1.0 has finally been released:
Thank you for your development efforts I very much enjoy playing this game!
