@topic: I think this is a very good attempt and definitely a step in the right direction.

I'm eagerly waiting for the crowdfunding phase, which is going to start between February and March.

@Armworm: My bad...please bare with me. Those who have read this information can simply ignore it, can't they ?

In the end I do not share the "extremism" of many people here. Hardware and systems which are only "a little bit more free than others" are a step in the right direction. A 100% free system might never happen. At least not in numbers of production or prices that all people can afford.

Just my 2 cents on this...

@Darksoul71: The recently endorsed gluglug x60 is about as close as their is at the moment. It boots free with coreboot, wifi, and they're actively working on VGA. The only nonfree part would be hard drive firmware, which imo is something people should be working on for a large number of drives.

Anyways nice find for an "open source" laptop, but not fully free for all the components.

This Novena Laptop is free because of its free Hardware. AFAIK this isn't the case for the gluglug laptops.

I'm still not sure where the information Armworm provided comes from.

This Novena "laptop" (quotes on purpose, see below) has challenges with non-free software for graphics in some cases while the Gluglug X60 does not. However, I understand that this is being worked on by someone else (not Bunny.) Once/if that's done it could equal the X60 in freedom, but not surpass it. So now would be the time to put out a call for help with the graphics issues.

On a side note (non-freedom): With the screen opening like this it doesn't seem very laptop-like to me, as an external keyboard would be needed while on the go: http://bunniefoo.com/novena/campaign/novena-open-rotate-small.gif which means lots of space will be needed.

I think the free software problem is with 3D acceleration. Doesn't Bunny himself actually skips the 3D functions of the otherwise free notefolder laptop because of it?

From a security perspective in the age of the NSA, this is a great concept because it will be much easier to examine your machine to ensure that it has not been tampered with, if you have the technical skill to determine such.

Definitely not a casual media consumption machine -- more suitable for hobbyists, tinkerers, and the paranoid.
