I was wondering if there are many Trisquel users that work in biology? It is exceedingly hard to find appropriate open programs for doing the day-to-day tasks when you work in molecular biology. I was planning to write a few python-based programs to take care of my personal needs, but first I wanted to check if someone knows of good software and also whether anyone is interested in joining the effort. My first targets are:

1. Program for viewing chromatograms (.ab files) from sequencing reactions. This would ideally also include an alignment fuction so that one can load several sequences and make sure that they overlap so that one can easily inspect whether a whole gene has been covered by the reactions.

2. Program for viewing vector maps and basic featurs for editing tereof.

Thoughts anyone?

hi sorry not my area of science. But in the off chance you did not check this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuScience some of the software I use in my area is there.
take special note of the biopython and bioperl pakages.

Those DEB repositories are probably what you are searching for your Trisquel 6.0 Toutatis. I assume they contain proprietary software. You should therefore investigate before installing a package.

Definately I would recommend:

first check add/remove software science list as said above.

Then check the other lists making sure you can install them through the synaptic package manager (or apt-get command line).

And as a last resort check that the deb packages are freesoftware, if so install them.
