I personally contributed to this, and would like to encourage Trisquel
users to also consider it, specially so close to the goal!
"The BackTrack Team is proud to have contributed 1000 EUR to the Debian
Administrator’s Handbook liberation fund
. This book, written by two
Debian developers, is a welcome addition to any administrator’s
bookshelf. Debian is very popular on servers and it’s also the base
distribution from which BackTrack is forged.
Security is not in rest in this book since a full chapter
is dedicated to
the topic. It covers setting up a firewall, monitoring, intrusion
detection systems, setting up SELinux policies, dealing with a
compromised machine, and gives many thoughful advice to define a
security policy within your organization.
The authors have pledged to release the book under an open source
license if the associated “liberation fund” reaches 25,000 EUR. Today,
there’s less than 3,000 EUR to raise and we invite you to contribute as
well. By giving 10 EUR or more, you’ll get a copy of the ebook as soon
as it’s available (even if the liberation fund is not completed). Click
here to contribute now ." -

So, they will only respect my freedom if I pay them ?
If they fail short they will not release it under a 'free' license ?
We’re hoping to complete the translation in the first quarter of 2012, which means that the book could be availabe in April 2012. But it’s up to you to decide whether it will be freely available or not…
I would discourage Trisquel users contributing to this project.

If you don't agree with that model, you could contact the writers to
make some suggestions for their future work. What would make you
contribute financially to such a project?
My interpretation is they can't afford to release that for free without
additional financial support, but there's every indication they would
otherwise, judging by the context and past work by Raphaël Hertzog.
Cheers,
f.

Your interpretation is biased by your good intention however that is not the reality.
Whether or not Raphaël Hertzog or any other member of the project has a good reputation it's irrelevant. The fact is that on the project site the freedom of the handbook license is clearly conditional.
They don't say that they need funds in order to finish a free handbook; they say that they will use a free license for the handbook if they raise enough money.
I hope you can spot the difference.

I don't think whether or not they desire money to do what they've proposed is a reason not to help. If it's dificult to free their work without getting money, I see no problem with paying them. It's better to help people who are likely not too concerned about freedom than to let a work simply stay non-free.

Why is it bad that the authors want to be able to support themselves for their work? In any case, since they've made it 94% of the way, clearly there are many who don't share your opinion.
They could just release it under a non-free license and be done with it. They'll probably rake in a decent amount of cash for it. They've decided to go a step further and see if they can still support themselves and make it free anyway.

I am sorry, I don't understand what's wrong with that approach.
I sounds to me as a good initiative.
If there is enough interest, the "product" gets released, otherwise it
does not.
In a sense, it incites the community to involve itself in that creation.
Otherwise, it's like if people will always be wanting to get something,
but will
never be ready to give for it.
If 5000 people give 5 €, the amount will be reached, the work will be
released as
free for the benefit of all.
Is it so much to ask among all the Debian or Debian-derived users ?
Does it mean freedom has no value ?
If you are not interested, you are free not to contribute, why discouraging
others to contribute ?

Absolutely agree with teodorescup.
Absolutely agree with teodorescup.
I am bringing back a dead thread, but it is important news. For those
who were interested, it seems the Liberation Fund reached its goal and
they are aiming to publish the freed book in May. I hope it all goes well.
The book is now available under GNU GPL2+ / CC-BY-SA 3.0 at
http://debian-handbook.info/2012/the-debian-administrators-handbook-is-available/
(This should make good reading for Trisquel users as well because Trisquel is based on Ubuntu which is based on Debian.)
