Panel Frustration

I realize there are myriads of problems with Gnome 3 but there is one "very simple thing" they've done that irks me to no end and, strange as it seems, it's one of the greatest things that turns me off with Gnome 3.

The inability to place applets/icons anywhere I want to put them on a panel creates absolute rage in me. Having the choice of everything cramped together to the left, right, and/or in the middle is absolute nonsense. Yes, we do have a "move" option but, let's face it, it sucks because you can only move right up against another icon/applet. There's no valid ability to space according to one's desires, as far as I can see.

How can I place/move icons/applets in a panel the way it's done in gnome 2? Please do not say by using Alt +right click. I'm well aware of that. My problem is what does/does not transpire after that. As an example ... I want to place a trash applet at a location approx. 1/3 of the panel length from the right end ... and I want absolutely nothing around it for about 3 icon widths to the left and right. It takes me about a second to do that in gnome 2. In gnome 3 I've yet to figure out how to do it in about 6 months.

Well, I always considered the GNOME panels simply rubbish.
Possible practical solutions would be the avant window navigator, cairo dock or the xfce panel.
I think xfce panel has the smallest memory footprint, you might want to start with that.

I suggest XFCE and just style it to fit your needs or to look close to Gnome
Classic.

With Gnome already installed on your system it's actually easier to get
running. Notifications work, Your panel or panels can be customized any way
you like.

Later, you can always go back and start removing the gnome packages you don't
want.

of Course LXDE and KDE are also available in the repos.
