Phone home?

My librebooted Lenovo T500 broke down. We use(d) it as our TV (internet and kodi) and the family now cries for an immediate solution.

I have another T500 which is not yet librebooted. It has a sim card reader slot which makes me suspicious: Will this computer phone home in the same way a mobile phone phones home even without a sim card?

What do you mean "home"? Or whom? Lenovo?

I think if it calls home, it won't need a SIM. There must be a cellular GSM GPRS (3G, LTE) card inside and a baseband processor on it. They usually come in msata or m.2 formats.

The presence of a SIM slot doesn't mean there's a GSM card installed. Without a card, the slot won't do anything meaningful.
