Printer problem

This may be a low tech problem but I can't solve it on my own, and I can't find a solution from others, i.e. the net. So I am asking you people for help.
I convinced my mother to switch to linux (Mint) which resulted in her (old) HP LaserJet P1005 not to work. I bought a new one for her.
The old printer also doesn't work on my computers, running Trisquel. I have searched for solutions and I have tried what my limited knowledge leads me to try, but still without success.
I noticed that the driver is 'foomatic' but I have no idea what this means. Should I avoid that or should I install further drivers or what...?
Now, when I connect and switch on the printer, it is on, i.e. the on-led is green, it makes 'warming up toner' sound and my computer recognises it correctly as a HP LaserJet P1005 immediately.
Does any have suggestions as for how to solve or this or test it further?
According to http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/models/laserjet/hp_laserjet_p1005.html that printer requires proprietary software to work:
Driver plug-in Required
Requires firmware download Yes
Here is the process to choose an HP printer that will work with 100% free GNU/Linux distributions (for other brands, it is harder to know unless you physically have the printer): https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/hp-laserjet-printer-p1005-printer-not-working-trisquel-60#comment-77026
Thanks. The OP of that thread was even about the same printer, i.e. HP LaserJet P1005.
Unfortunately I'll have to through it away now.
My other printer (a HP OfficeJet model) works fine under Trisquel. But reading Chris' and Hors Ligne's comment makes me unsure: Can I trust, that the hplip software has not downloaded any proprietary blobs to my machine?
If you are referring to the "hplip" package in Trisquel's repository, you are fine.
And to clarify: If I can use my printer with my Trisquel computer using only Trisquel repos, hp isn't going to install blobs on my machine?
I have not checked but that I very much doubt "hplip" ever contacts HP sites. Also , the Trisquel project would consider the silent installation of blobs a critical bug.
My own HP printer is a HP-LaserJet-P1505n, which has worked fine with my ThinkPad T420 running Trisquel for several years, and I don't get HP spam. The hplip package name is a familiar one in that context. It always tells me there's been a printer error, but it always finishes the job flawlessly with no further hassles. It also prints from a separate Windows 10 PC without any complaints. It has a wireless network connection.
I also recall that I have checked the hp-list that Chris refers to in that other printer-thread. I'll probably have to double check...
