RARv3 support

Perhaps some simple instructions should be given to users who wish to open RAR files.
Here is what I did:
sudo apt-get install build-essential libgnustep-base-dev libz-dev libbz2-dev libssl-dev libicu-dev
cd XADMaster (go to where the XADMaster folder is)
make -f Makefile.linux
./unar filename.rar

unarchiver is available in the repos, there is no need to compile it.

Thanks. I thought unarchiver and theunarchiver were not the same. Also, since unar is what needs to be typed in the terminal I think a quick tutorial (with a short example) would be helpful.
It's great news that RAR support is now available.
Will RAR support be included in an update for current Trisquel installations? Also will it be installed by default in future Trisquel releases?
It's already included in 4.5, I don't know about the older releases.
It is in the repository of Taranis (Trisquel 4.0) too: http://packages.trisquel.info/taranis-updates/unarchiver
It looks like this thread is lacking a beginning! I will write it for you:
Finally, a free software is able to extract RARv3 archives ( http://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/free-rarv3-extraction ). It is named TheUnarchiver and can be compiled on Trisquel GNU/Linux. To do so, download the source code (behind this link: http://theunarchiver.googlecode.com/files/TheUnarchiver2.7.1_src.zip ), uncompress it (for instance right-clicking and choosing "Extract here"), open a terminal... and follow the instructions at the top of the thread!
EDIT: Rubén sent his message while I was typing this one. Of course, he is right: let us us the packaged version! (That is what I call "reactivity": Trisquel rules!)
Thanks! I wrote the thread before going to bed and forgot to write an intro.
I assume Ubuntu will be packaging Unarchiver before the next release?
Anyway, I'm glad this important gap in the free software world has now been closed (no thanks to the WinRAR people themselves, naturally).
> I assume Ubuntu will be packaging Unarchiver before the next release?
I don't think they will ever package it. I hope to be wrong, though.
Why wouldn't they package it? They package lots of trivial things that five people use, but not this?
They already provide non-free unrar in multiverse. My guess is Ubuntu users who want RARv3 support will probably either use that or use winrar through wine.
If that's your argument, then why is Gnash packaged in Ubuntu?
That's actually a really good question, especially considering that the installer offers the proprietary plugin right from the start. Maybe it's a relic from their earlier days. Note that their home page in 2006 (see http://replay.web.archive.org/20061231113433/http://www.ubuntu.com/) talks about the "Ubuntu Philosophy" and "free software" (as opposed to proprietary) while their current home page does not (the philosophy is still there, but buried under a few subpages).
Also, the philosophy now refers to "open source" when once it was about "free software".
We can only hope that they will not water it down even further (if that is possible).
Anyway, I hope they do package it at least in the name of choice.
I think because Ubuntu is really in the "open source" camp they will use or at least offer a proprietary program and both the free alternative if the free alternative does not perform at a certain level (e.g. adobe flash and gnash). Since open source only cares about the quality of software really if the floss program doesn't meat a certain quality they will at least offer the non-free program.
However, I believe if they are given two equal quality programs such as a non-free rar unarchiver and a free one they will pick the floss one.
I mean if A and B are of equal quality but one is FLOSS and the other isn't of course you would pick the FLOSS one even if you are in the open source camp.

Don't count on it:

relax, time will tell
I noticed it was deleted from my system when I upgraded to 5.0 Trisquel... fileroller doesn't know what to do with rar files it says... Doesn't seem to be in the 5.0 repos... help? Should I just re-download from their site?
The package is in Trisquel 5.0 Dagda's repository but has changed its name (thus explaining why you lost it during the update): http://packages.trisquel.info/dagda/theunarchiver
Just install it from the package manager.
sweet... was this mentioned in the release notes? I wonder what the reason was for name change... Thanks MB!
Well, this application is called "theunarchiver" ( https://code.google.com/p/theunarchiver ) and not only "unarchiver" so the change makes sense.
