Hi,

Is there a testing repository available? or any upgrade chains to the latest version of mate?

Have been trying to compile from tarball but running into library version inconsistencies when installing the dependencies...

Any pointers would be muchly appreciated.

Thanks,

Upgrading fundamental packages such as GLib library is risky: "you have held broken packages", as the error says. You can try to "fix broken packages", e.g., from the "Edit" menu of the "Synaptic Package Manager" in the "Control Center".

You can install this PPA for MATE 1.16: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mate-dev/+archive/ubuntu/xenial-mate

However, it is apparently unmaintained. So, if MATE 1.16 suffers from vulnerabilities, I doubt that PPA will propose updates patching them.

Or you can use a rolling distribution: https://wiki.parabola.nu/Beginners%27_Guide
