So recently I installed Trisquel 12 in this computer and this are some of my findings:

1.- The installer still doesn't work, but luckily the process here still works just the same: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/arm64-chromebooks-trisquel-installation

2.- The issue with trisquel-desktop-common-recommended is still there: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/samsung-chromebook-v1-kevin-support-group#one

3.- Something must have change from Trisquel 11 to 12 when it comes to using gnome shell, it is most noticeable when using a higher than 100% scaling (even if it isn't non fractional), which is a must due to the screen high density. In this scenario the "setting" window tears apart graphically very badly, were with Trisquel 11 this didn't happen. I added a workaround: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/samsung-chromebook-v1-kevin-support-group#two

There are reasons I'm using gnome-shell over mate.

There are some other test I must made, so I'll keep reporting here later. Thank you.

At a 100% scaling a single little horizontal line is shown across the screen once in a while, specially while scrolling.

I have opened an issue about that problem with the trisquel-desktop-common-recommended package.

KDE Plasma is behaving better this time around, I'm switching to it from gnome-shell. Thank god, because I much more prefer KDE, I only used gnome-shell because KDE was really slow on Aramo. Also, virtual keyboard maliit-keyboard. Ibus was complaining for some reason while in Plasma's wayland session, and it appears it was impeding maliit-keyboard operation, so I ended up uninstalling it. Hopefully it is not indispensable. Ibus is part of the trisquel-desktop-common-recommended package.

OK never mind, using KDE Plasma works like while in water in video games. But I think I have made a compromise. I used both Trisquel Mini, for when I use the computer as a desktop, and KDE Plasma when using it as a tablet. Not a bad idea I think.

woops! I wasn't using Trisquel Mini https://trisquel.info/es/forum/trisquel-mini-vs-normal-trisquel I was using the "MATE" session from the session manager by mistake. Either way, it seems it's like regular Trisquel session but without Compson and works great.

Couldn't use LXDE because I didn't find a good way to scale the desktop. Option of creating a .Xresources file with the following content:

Xft.dpi: 300

Didn't seem to work on all the content. I did made the panel bigger and its icons larger, but there are more elements not affected and at one point I found the desktop lagging pretty bad for some reason, so MATE without Compton seems the way to go for me.

OK, I've been battling to get the best experience I could for this computer. This are my findings:

EDIT: Point number one seems to have been a config problem. I've temporally moved .config to .config_backup and Trisquel MATE seems to working fine now. It is fair to assumed that point 2 might be the same.

1.- So regular Trisquel desktop on MATE, lags a lot for some reason. Despite what I mentioned in one of my comments, a different MATE session that "works" is not available. Some how came to it by removing some packages but unfortunately I couldn't replicated. I might ask one some of my friends to see if they know what happened, but even then there were problems with LibreOffice when going from another to window, where LibreOffice's tool bar took a while to be drawn. If this give you some idea of what was happening please let me know.

2.- LXDE is the same. It is specially noticeable while scrolling in abrowser.

2.- KDE Plasma is still sluggish, not as bad as MATE though. Maybe if most animations could be disabled, but I'm not totally sure.

EDIT: A much better solution was found for the problem described in the following paragraphs. All that is needed to avoid the tearing of the windows is to add the following to your .profile user file:

export GSK_RENDERER=gl

3.- Gnome is still the best it seems. Unfortunately, there is a problem when a scaling factor is chosen (even if not fractional) in the screens settings, all gnome native apps like the file manager, the text editor and the settings window itself starts flickering or braking apart graphically if they are not maximized. Scaling is a must because of this computer hi dpi.

A work around is scaling the text only, this option is available a the "tweak" app, in the font section. Unfortunately, this does not scales everything, the windows buttons to close, minimize and maximize buttons stay quite small. This isn't so bad while using a mouse or the touch pad, but it is a problem if tablet mode is desired to be used. I tried editing the css styles to make them bigger from there, but then I noticed that most windows of gnome shell like the aforementioned file manager and text editor were using their own styles and I gave up on it.

I first thought that the best I could do is to use gnome when using the computer as a desktop and KDE Plasma when in tablet mode. This implied I was going to exit one session to use the other, but I came up with another option.

Since I use tablet mode the lesser, it won't happen too often that I will need to use a window non maximized or a dialogs which are also affected, and I wanted to make it easy and quick to switch between a 1x desktop scale with a bigger text, and a higher scale with a regular text size, so I created a script that help me with it.

I'm attaching the script and an example launcher that can be added to ~/.local/share/applications/ to have it on gnome-shell quick menu. Another option is to create a custom keyboard shortcut on gnome's keyboard settings. Simply be sure to change the path to the right location where the script is located if you use the .desktop file or the keyboard shortcut.

This is where I found the original script that I used https://askubuntu.com/a/1267328

All I did is to add two variables to select the scaling factor for the text and the desktop and apply them accordingly in each scenario.

That reminds me of what I did on my parents' system: https://trisquel.info/forum/setting-how-compact-interface-trisquel-12-mate#comment-181970

The Greybird window borders not surviving reboots, I ended up using "High contrast", if I remember well.

I found that the package libreoffice-gtk3 is not installed when using tasksel's trisquel-gnome task. With out it, it seem that LibreOffice does what I was describing about being drawn really slow. I might reported as a bug.

OK never mine, the problem with the windows being tear down is I need to use gl instead of ngl rendering:

export GSK_RENDERER=gl

That fixed everything. Thank you for your patience.
