Have you tried logging in a "real" terminal? You can press Ctrl+Alt+F1 at the graphical logging screen and enter the same information to log in a terminal. From there you can take a look (with the 'less' command) at the logs in /var/log and maybe identify the problem.
thanks guy, i`ll try it now
i logged in terminal and executed sudo less /var/log. the response is `/var/log is a directory`
Indeed, it is a directory. The original poster might have meant dmesg, although I'm not sure. Try the following command: "cat /var/log/dmesg" Syslog and kern.log in the same directory might also have relevant information although I'm not sure.
If the terminal is still accessible after the X session froze, I was actually thinking of:
$ less /var/log/Xorg.0.log
