2 days ago, the decompiled/deobfuscated code of the proprietary VoIP software, Skype, was released to public. A free software replacement for Skype is on the FSF's high priority list for a long time but this task is still not fulfilled to these days. Because this is NOT a reverse-engineered code, this does mean that there will be no free/libre client for GNU now (and it is questionable whether that is legally possible at all).

Although using the Skype's proprietary protocol is a bad idea, even if we had a free replacement, it is a good way to help people switching towards freedom. Hope this issue will be sorted out in the foreseeable future.

Just to be clear, in the second paragraph, with the "free replacement" I meant a free/libre reverse-engineered Skype client.

There is one good thing to come out of Skype's hard work: Opus
