Hello to everyone, whenever I start Trisquel the Syslog and Kern.log files increase their size until I have to clear them otherwise I don't have enough free space to load the OS. How can I solve the problem?

Well, the good solution would be to solve the problem that must be repeatedly written in kern.log. What is it? Maybe it is a support issue that would be solved by the installation of a newer kernel: https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

I checked the files but I can't understand what they say. I installed the latest version of linux-libre kernel and sometimes I have to reboot the OS otherwise it doesn't work: everything is blocked. At the moment I can't understand what the log files contain, I'm not an expert....

When I started using my first computer, I also didn't understand how
things worked, over time, I begun understanding that I could only solve
my occasional computer problems if I do share what I currently have with
the people related to the same thing I use, even though I don't need to
understand everything that exists in the universe, because I'm not the
know-all-person. :)

Still as of today, when I have a problem I can't solve, or something I
can't understand, I seek advice from people who are related to those
things, and that I think that might have some experience to share. This
can be as simple as copying a little piece of text from that log file,
and inserting it here for us to read. So, go ahead and do as I just
said. ;)

Note, however that, if the text repeats over and over, or is too similar
to various ones, please paste only the first occurence.

Respectfully, Adonay.

Those logs look normal. Do they still increase until you run out of disk space?

Having five lines (from "Missing Free firmware" to "Could not read microcode: -22") logged every 2ms (the numbers between squared brackets are times since the last boot) is abnormal... but the logs Davide0 attached are not like that. They look normal, hence my question: do they still increase until you run out of disk space? The newer version of Linux-libre may have solved the problem but the older logs may be still present, taking all the space. Let us see the output of the following command that shows the twenty largest files in /var/log:
$ ls -lhS /var/log/ | head -20
If you cannot log into a graphical session (a full root partition does that if I remember well), log into a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or Ctrl+Alt+F2 or ... or Ctrl+Alt+F6).

Today I started the OS and the files increased a lot, in fact now they are about 6.5GB each.

one part of the output of "tail -f /var/log/syslog" is:

See if some messages are repeated many times (and show them to us):
$ less /var/log/kern.log
You can press PgUp/PgDn to scroll up/down one page; 'q' to quit.

It apparently is a problem with the Wifi. You use the firmware that the package "open-ath9k-htc-firmware" provides, right? I use it too but I have no problem. Maybe the hardware is defective...

How much space do you have for / and how much for /home

Is your disk encrypted?

What's the total space of your disk?

It is very probable that my hypothesis ("*maybe* the hardware is defective") is wrong. Do you have another hypothesis? Or do you disagree that the problem "*apparently* is with the Wifi"? That is easy to test:

  1. Disconnect the Wifi (with the related Fn key on the keyboard or physically, e.g., if it is a USB adapter, maybe deactivating Wifi from NetworkManager is enough);
  2. Save some space on the root partition (see https://trisquel.info/forum/trisquel-not-detecting-thinkpenguin-wifi-adapter-after-install#comment-118193 that I have just written);
  3. See if the message keeps on being logged in kern.log, looking at the live output of 'tail -F /var/log/kern.log' or with 'less /var/log/kern.log' after working a little (using Ethernet if the network is needed) or searching for pieces of it with 'grep'.

The kernel messages look more "low-level" to me. But, again, it is very probable that I am wrong! Over the years, I have been wrong multiple times in this forum. I would first try deactivating the Wifi, as I wrote in the message above.

Thanks Heather and thanks to Magic Banana. I disabled the Wifi on BIOS and for now everything seems to work fine. But I don't know how to editing network interfaces and rc.local, so I took the easiest way for me...
With Xubuntu, when I enable wifi in BIOS the network works well and I don't need any proprietary driver, that is what Xubuntu says (I don't need an USB adapter but the internal hardware works good)...

>With Xubuntu, when I enable wifi in BIOS the network works well and I don't need any proprietary driver

That's because what you need is not the proprietary driver but rather the **firmware**, which on Xubuntu is loaded in the kernel when you boot your machine. The same proprietary firmware is obviously missing in Trisquel.
Hence your hardware 'works good' with Xubuntu shipping the vanilla linux kernel that is full of proprietary firmware blobs (the one for your wifi included) and works NOT with Trisquel for the particular needed blob is not there..
