On most sites with information about the Lenovo T440p it is stated that it works with a maximum of 16 GB RAM (2x8 GB).

On the other hand, T440p works with e.g. an i7-4712MQ cpu, which is stated to work with a maximum of 32 GB RAM (e.g.: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/78933/intel-core-i74712mq-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-30-ghz/specifications.html).

Are there other factors than the cpu which determines how much RAM a computer can use?

Probably the size of the computer is also a factor among other things.

Intel only tested it with 2×8GB, so that's the official spec. I think the 16GB chips likely came out after this so it's not as if Intel really had any such things to test it with anyway. And when did did come out Intel likely didn't go back and re-test to update the spec. But that doesn't mean 2×16GB won't work - it just wasn't validated for it. Many systems can handle more than the tested limit, especially if the memory controller supports it.

Thanks for your comments. I'll research a bit more, and in the end I will probably just try... (once I get the i7-4712MQ I just bought second hand).
