Technoethical - no workstation, no refund

Hi everyone,

I'm a long-term Trisquel daily user since I switched from gNewSense to this rather decent, non-bloated distro.

Unfortunately, I'm now writing to warn people from becoming potential victims of Mr. Tiberiu Turbureanu's shop/"business" (?).

On the 2023-03-11, I ordered the D16 Workstation https://tehnoetic.com/laptops/tet-t400s from the Technoethical shop and promptly paid the 2.155 EUR (incl. shipping). On the 2023-03-15, Technoethical confirmed to have received the payment. Till today, after more than 2 years, neither was the computer sent nor the money returned. Mr. Tiberiu Turbureanu made multiple excuses for delays when I contacted him through various ways (e-mail, written letter), which did not lead to tangible progress or a resolution. Mr. Turbureanu stopped responding. This is while the product continues to be on sale to this day (money will be taken). "Availability: Temporarily Out Of Stock" for more than two years should be grounds enough for simply returning my payment, but no, all I got is excuses I have to assume are fake, potentially in an attempt to defraud me.

Other posts I've found here https://trisquel.info/en/forum/technoethical-no-laptop-no-refund or https://trisquel.info/en/forum/technoethical-deception-and-fraud are locked, while links to and advertisements by the shop remain active. After some more search, Reddit has similar posts like https://www.reddit.com/r/libreboot/comments/1jddr87/technoethicalcom_scammed_me/ or https://www.reddit.com/r/freesoftware/comments/17wfhfx/technoethical_is_still_a_scam/ but these tend to disappear from Reddit, including one by a different person I added my case under.

It seems around 2017-2018, Technoethical had some issues, but managed to sometimes resolve these, by either delivering or refunding. In the 2022-2023 period, it seems Mr. Turbureanu took the money and ran, or resorted to just make some claims instead of delivery/refund. Initially, he replied to some of my messages, but after various levels of escalation, it seems impossible to still get hold of him, via various other means/contacts. So I guess there's no other option left to escalate a few levels more.

Apparently, can't edit nor delete my own forum post. Fine.

Correction: link is https://tehnoetic.com/desktops/tet-d16ws and not to a laptop.

do you know, how it was shipped(or that it was)

it could be the case that there is malfeascance
taking place you are not aware of, for example,
it's likely, they could be facing significant
harassment by inexplicable third-parties,
making orders, demanding refunds, making it
impossible for the company to do business
selling free operating systems as opposed
to the mega corporate alternatives

you have to be aware of misinformation furthermore,
and that gnulinux communities face this kind of very
difficult, and extreme harrasment. also that technology
itself enables the harassment to effect organizations
at scale

No, I'm not aware if it was shipped, but there has been and is no indication for such. Mr. Turbureanu several times claimed per e-mail that shipment is delayed because he's looking for better parts or some libreboot/software issues (claim is he built it for two other clients some time ago that might be the two reviews on the shop site, but apparently can't/won't anymore, plus he didn't publish my negative review on the site), better packaging, got delayed for family matters, and so on. On the 2023-09-30 he claimed he would ship in the coming week. Similar on other occasions, claiming within 6 weeks, but none of these happened of course. On the 2023-12-05 he claimed he was prevented from delivering because of "cashflow issues" (despite I paid in full and in advance). On the 2024-10-11 in response to my written postal letter he said after other personal matters, he'll work on my order with priority, and since then I didn't get any more responses nor updates from him. Basically, given there has been no claim that any shipment took actually place till this day, and I might be allowed to expect that there's at the very least a tracking ID, if not insurance, included in the paid shipping fee, for no shipping documentation produced nor such claim made, obviously this didn't take place.

For these reasons I'm on a path of escalation, both reporting it to authorities, warning against the shop, etc., and especially so since I found there's more affected people with similar cases in the category of high-price items. On the basis that the plans for delivery never materialized, that I still didn't get any path to refund or resolution, can't have any idea if he actually ordered/built anything or not. Seems he's just withholding my money indefinitely, without something in return.

Of course, I asked for a refund, because I lost all trust in whatever Mr. Turbureanu might or might not put together. If shipment is eventually made, I would not accept the order and return it. He could then remove the "temporarily out of stock" and sell it to the next customer.

Granted, I do understand that business can be difficult, there can be supply-chain issues and so on. I wonder if Mr. Turbureanu spent my money on some parts but then was unable or unwilling to put together some machine according to his own spec or better, so the money is sunken/stuck in this but no good product ready from it. I doubt that I still want something after this long time, in case he's fiddling/tinkering around with stuff. This scenario kind of conflicts as the claim is that he sold & delivered it twice some time ago. If the money was not spent, I wonder where it went to and why I can't get it back. Romania is an EU member state so I wonder if I/customers get some consumer protection to return an ecommerce order. Finally, I don't see how/why support this kind of business practice that leaves me with the loss/damage and delay, especially given the claims and business conduct. Any big electronics shop takeout, be it online or physical, is far, far better! :-( In my own few business dealings, of course I always try to protect customers/clients from damages at my own expense, despite this isn't always fully that easy, but just can't be their loss. I can imagine, for running any such kind of online shop, there's always some mail loss, returns from customers, supply-chain, quality issues and so on, and the business needs to take care of that and factor it in somehow I assume, otherwise can't remain operational for long, if all of that is calculated far too tight or any little thing goes wrong. I mean, what's the course to make the Technoethical high-price item customers who didn't get their orders delivered whole again?

Yes, I did sent a letter twice. Could be that the official address from the registries need some minor adjustments, because the first letter was returned as undeliverable from the Romanian postal service. The other one got delivered, probably to a post box or something, but eventually Mr. Turbureanu got hold of it. I'm glad he responded to it on the 2024-10-11, but since then I don't get any more updates or replies via e-mail. I have a hard time imagining it'll lead to some progress or resolution if I repeat my same points in another written postal letter, given the one delivered wasn't much successful in that regard. Now, based on your advice, I guess you're suggesting I "old school" should go to his place and meet him in person, to see what he's up to and how I'm going to get my money back. I mean, I guess that's eventually ending up as the only remaining option, right?

A single 16GB stick of DDR3 ram and no hard drive for 2,000 Euros?

Wow.

For many years, I have been supporting the FSFE with donations, so OK also order from libre businesses. This has been my first order of a somewhat more decent workstation machine, as otherwise I'm on many old, second-hand, low-powered notebooks. Mostly because back in 2023 I wanted/needed something that's sufficient for doing some video/streaming I wanted for starting some business things back then. For lack of hardware delivery, these options/opportunities have elapsed/expired since then :-(

I ordered a wifi usb adapter from Technoethical in March 2021, after sending a message to inquire about it one month later, I quickly received an apology for the delay and then it was shipped quickly. In August 2021, I ordered a galaxy S3 with Replicant from Technoethical, as well as another wifi usb adapter. After some time, I sent a message to ask, there was no reply. I sent several messages since then, there was never any reply. Then I gave up, I don't expect I will ever receive anything from Technoethical.

You guys should try to skip the internet, and get them on the phone. Old school, telephone, letter in the mail : D

Get them on the phone and talk to a real human being, don't rely on the virtual world :D

Something weird with the forums is going on, every time I add code tags like in this post "< em > < / em >" a picture appears inside the preview chat window with a link to this picture: https://trisquel.info/files/imagecache/thumbnail/repository_0.png

apparently linux only works as a server for windowsOS users ; d

AKA I think these linux users are trying to tell us something!

It really IS high time the FSF stopped endorsing tehnoetic. They should take them off their list of supported vendors. It makes them look bad having tehnoetic on their list of stores they support.

This has happened many times in the past since maybe 2019 or so... that store shouldn't be trusted anymore.

I have largely stayed quiet on this since then, but honestly...

No. The FSF needs to put their foot down with him and his egregious behavior. I am one of the few people who ordered from him who actually got the product I asked from him... but still. This was before he started going down this path.

Its rather sad Tiberiu has gone down this road.

Anywho, yeah... don't trust him. Vikings and Zerocat are more trustworthy then he is. Or if you really have to... somewhere else entirely.
