Hello all, I can't seem to get the tor-browser to play videos.

I download the tar.xz from their site, and also tried installing from the ppa.

They both don't work. The video plays, but its just black/blank. on any site.

I use the default gnome desktop, and also notice that the when the video is playing, the tabs on the panel change from two rows to one row. And if i keep clicking on the video they flash back and forth.

Another user in the room tried to use his tor-browser on kde, and noticed the same issue. Videos just play black.

Another user private messaged me and said that the tor-browser no longer works right since trisquel 7? Is that right? any ideas on how to fix this?

Would installing the proprietary driver fix it? I really don't want to do that...

I hope you're willing to contribute the same amount of bandwidth that you're going to waste with those videos to the TOR network.

@cooloutac,

The Tor browser works great in Trisquel 7, at least for me. You don't have to install the browser, just download the archive, extract the files an use the terminal to run it (not as root).

As danieru mentioned is not a good idea to watch videos through the TOR network.

Anyway what videos are not playing, YouTube videos, other videos?

I'm guessing it's got to do with Noscript (try turning it off). I'm probably wrong but still might, just might, be right.

It could be a problem of codecs on your system. Tor Browser allows for gstreamer to be used which means that formats you play on your system should also play on the browser. Try going to
about:config
search for media.gstreamer.enabled
and turn it false. Now go to youtube and try playing a video. It should use html5 and webm to play.
If it doesn't work check if you messed with some Noscript configuration.

IMPORTANT:
If people want to support the tor NETWORK they should donate to people running relays and not Tor Project itself. For example read this Tor Blog post:
https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tor-weekly-news-%E2%80%94-june-24th-2015

Nos Oignons really needs some love if we want the network to continue existing!

From Tor FAQ :

Why can't I view videos on YouTube and other Flash-based sites?

YouTube and similar sites require third party browser plugins such as Flash. Plugins operate independently from Firefox and can perform activity on your computer that ruins your anonymity. This includes but is not limited to: completely disregarding proxy settings, querying your local IP address, and storing their own cookies. It is possible to use a LiveCD solution such as or The Amnesic Incognito Live System that creates a secure, transparent proxy to protect you from proxy bypass, however issues with local IP address discovery and Flash cookies still remain.

I just use a user agent switcher and set it to iPad or Android tablet to force sites to use HTML5 video. Unfortunately, the majority of sites use mp4 with H264 instead of WebM.
