Just have to say something about Trisquel 10 which I've been using on and off for a few days now, and its this. It's great. Granted, I am running it on incredibly libre friendly hardware (librebooted T400 Thinkpad), but honestly I think it could replace any moderately intelligent computer users daily driver. I have had absolutely no issues with anything, abrowser is great, Falkon makes a nice speedy alternative. VLC has played everything I've thrown at it. Software installs well and you have lots and lots of libre choices these days.
Kudos to the developers, both of Ubuntu and Trisquel. Amazing work.

I am also quite happy with Trisquel.
Trisquel is the most user friendly distro of all. More than Ubuntu, which is always trying to do a bit too much and tripping over its own feet to a greater or lesser extent. Trisquel knows what its users need and want and delivers exactly that.
I only have one slight problem with Trisquel 10, and it is Trisquel 9. It has been such a great release that I feel absolutely no need to upgrade until it reaches EOL, which is at least a year from now.
The upgrades from T7 to T8 (with the switch to Mate) and from T8 to T9 came with marked improvements each time, so it is tempting to follow suit, but it also feels that T9 has reached such a level of maturity that it makes one think twice before upgrading.
Apart from that, I entirely subscribe to the above.

After upgrade from Trisquel 9 to Trisquel 10 on my D8, the time until first freeze was very short. Next time I booted, I started by apt update and upgrade, the session froze during apt upgrade. Switching to a terminal does not work. I am waiting a bit to see if something happens, then I press reset and wait for reboot. In total it is several minutes. With Trisquel 9, I tried all Linux libre kernels, searched on internet, etc, no solution.
I may try reinstalling Trisquel 10 from the ISO, provided I find a way not to disturb my Debian install. With Debian, it happens that the Mate session is suddenly closed but that is not frequent and then, the computer is immediately usable.
On my laptops, I am sticking to Trisquel 10. In a way, it gives me more work but I still want to remain familiar with a system that I can easily recommend to newbies and contribute to. Though I am wondering whether I am the only one to have such problems.
You may want to test your memory for errors. I helped someone whose system was freezing test their memory for errors a few days ago, and they found thousands of errors on a single 4gb stick. They replaced it with a new 8gb stick. I'm still waiting to hear if that solved all the freezing problems, but I think it should have.

How can I do that?
I found some pages saying there is an option in GRUB for that but I don't have this. With a Trisquel live USB, I cannot access any menu because my computer only supports text mode at boot, I just get a command line "boot:" and nothing happens. If I type help and enter, I get some text and Trisquel starts, but no memtest.
The next pages found by DDG are to a company making a binary that is obviously proprietary software.
Then I found https://www.memtest.org that provides some ISO. It says it is GPL software. Should I get this ISO and boot on it?
EDIT: I downloaded https://www.memtest.org/download/5.31b/memtest86+-5.31b.iso.gz, unzipped and dd to an ISO, it fails to boot (it says "booting on hard disk" even though I selected the USB, and some error that coreboot can't find something). So not sure what to do.
You can install a package that will allow to have the option at grub time.
Can't recall the name right now, was it memtest86+ ?
Edit: Yeah i think it was it, as it updates the grub configuration.
Install memtest86+ from the Trisquel repo, like Ark said, and then when you reboot you should have a "Memory Test" option in your main grub menu. Run it for one full pass. Thanks. I started this, it has shown a blue screen looking like what is shown in the page of your link, then, without me doing anything, it started flashing the attached image roughly twice per second. Pressing Esc does not stop it unliked what the page says. The page says it can takes hours or even days. I have 16GB memory. I don't know how long I should wait. If it isn't finished tomorrow morning, I'll have to press reset as I need to use my computer.
It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. That screen display does not look right to me, but I'm not an expert with memtest86+ at all.
It is not right indeed. I would try to remove the memory stick one by one (or, if you only have one, to replace it).

Run Memtest86+ with the remaining one (for a night or so). If the test fails again, repeat the test with only the other stick plugged.

Let us first see if there is indeed one bad stick. It would be surprising if both were failing at the same time: if none of them passes Memtest86+, the problem may be elsewhere (the processor?).
Anyway, if you buy a new stick for that machine, you want it "DIMM DDR3" and at least 800 MHz (you may not find as low nowadays, but a stick capable of a higher frequency can use a lower one too). It will cost you ~50€ for 8 GB.
