Our latest version is ready for download. It includes a lot of updates,
along with an overhaul of the development process -compilation scripts
and build jails- which was largely upgraded to simplify automation.
This improvements made it easier to apply changes to the upstream
packages, leading to a much more polished result.

Along with many bugfixes, Slaine comes with a new boot manager for the
live images, an improved installer which showcases the project
highlights, and new programs like the Remmina remote desktop client,
the social network client Gwibber or the backup tool Deja-dup.

The web browser received several changes to improve speed -enabling
http pipelining and other methods-, privacy -blocking third party
cookies by default and moving to Duck Duck Go as default search
engine-, and usability -the preinstalled FlashVideoReplacer plugin
allows to watch videos from YouTube, Vimeo and many others. This
improvements have been backported to 4.0 LTS.

Congratulations and thanks for the hard work! Looking forward to installing it :).

By the way, what's a 'build jail' ?...

If I recall correctly build jails are used to purge proprietary blobs from the kernel or Ubuntu base as a whole. I forget the process, but I think I saw it on here somewhere before. I will link it if I find it.

I found some issues after updating to 4.5. The indicator applet includes a volume control as always, but same volume control is now inside the tray. Can the new volume control be removed?
Also, the keyboard layout isn't shown anymore, there is some symbol in the tray that looks like a keyboard, but it doesn't show the active layout. What do I have to do to get an indication of the active layout instead of the useless keyboard symbol?

You can remove the notification applet like any applet: right-click on it and choose "Remove fro the panel". However, since this applet is newer in Gnome, I believe the intended use is to keep this applet and remove the old "volume control" applet.

You should check whether your keyboard preferences really include several layouts (left click on the applet, etc.). Indeed, mine does and the applet indicates the one in use.

I tried removing all layouts and adding them again, then I logged out and back in - still I don't see the current layout in the tray, just a symbol where I can click and choose one of my three layouts.

That is strange. Maybe it is a display issue... Have you try re-adding the notification applet in a free space of the panel?

I found out it's a bug in Ubuntu, but I can't find the link to the source of my information atm. Once I find that page again I'll file a report here.

Filed a bug report here, but something went wrong with the stupid link to the original ubuntu bug, so here it is again

I just fresh-installed Trisquel 4.5, and let me just say I am thoroughly wowed. This is not a word I use lightly: I have never been really and truly wowed by an operating system, but I am with Trisquel Slaine. Such a flawless OS and a great out-of-box experience, yet small enough to fit on a CD-ROM, and without any nonfree software whatsoever. It almost seems too good to be true.

Our future looks bright indeed. :)

The thing that wowes me most about Trisquel is, it boots on some machines where, for example, Fedora refuses to. One would think a 100% free distro would support less hardware, but nope, in my household it's even the other way round :P

When I saw the new wallpaper I was like WOW, that's something. Well the biggest relief(after the Freedom issue of course) after leaving Ubuntu was getting rid of the Orange-brown thing. I really appreciate quidam's choice in art. :)

One thing I would like to point out though, is why have the indicator-applet, libdbusmenu, appindicator libraries removed. This also removes the message indicator and the new awesome volume indicator, leaving us with the old n boring gnome-volume-control-applet. I wish indicators were there by default.
Also I would suggest having monochrome tray icons in the Trisquel icon theme, since it is in elementary(off which ours is based) and is less distracting.

One thing more, since ppp and wvdial are not installed, and networkmanager doesn't want to connect to my EDGE connection, i'm left with the option to download the ppp packages from my trisquel-kde partition(yes I have it installed too) and manually install them to be able to connect to the internet.

That apart, congratulations for the release and Thank you for making us able to live in complete freedom. :)

I just realized there are two volume controls for me. I am still using a beta install, but it wasn't there until full release I don't think. Also, I am using the AWN wallpaper, and I don't see any new ones... May have to check the release iso for it.

I concur, the old volume control should have been removed and the indicator applet used, unless there is good reason. Perhaps it was a last minute oversight.

The two volume controls issue is very easy to fix: go to startup applications and uncheck the "Volume Control". This thing was the standard volume control before the indicator applet came along and is enabled by some incidence. Do you also experience some strange behavior of the keyboard layout indicator?

I downloaded and installed the RC on a spare partition, therefore I know about the applet. And as for the wallpaper, i saw it when I upgraded th KDE one.
And yes +1 for the indicator, it just looks and seems more sane. And for the message indicator too, it should be there. BTW, I'll just install them when i wish, they're in the repo aren't they.

When I try to install Slaine 4.5 (the RC worked well) from a USB pen drive, the boot loader just says "Unknown word in configuration file" and just waits.

What's this? How to fix it?

My soln. was to install from RC and run "apt-get update". But this should be temporary.

Thanks.

It's a bug in the usb-creator, can be fixed editing the file
"syslinux/syslinux.cfg" in the USB drive, find the word "ui" and remove
it along with it's following space.

Hope that helps.
