Hi!

I got Trisquel 10 "nabia" running (mostly) on an ODROID-XU4.

I started with Ubuntu's image for the bootloader and kernel: https://wiki.odroid.com/odroid-xu4/os_images/linux/ubuntu_5.4/minimal/20210928
I replaced the root partition with a new btrfs filesystem, and extracted trisquel-base_10.0_armhf.tar.bz2 from
https://cdimage.trisquel.info/trisquel-images/ into it.

Everything seems to be working in userland and with the drivers, other than maybe the GPU, which I have not tried to use. This is just a server for now, so I haven't installed a GUI; the console over HDMI is working, and Ethernet is working. It's using eMMC; the microSD is recognized also.

I haven't yet been able to use Trisquel's Linux kernel or Linux-libre, because this u-boot bootloader seems to require the kernel image in "zImage" format, which I have not found to be commonly distributed (and also the initrd in "uInitrd" format, although I've been able to generate that using mkimage from u-boot-tools). Installing u-boot myself which might support more formats (i.e. using u-boot-tools and u-boot-sunxi) was not successful. Using GRUB (as suggested in https://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?t=42771 and https://forum.odroid.com/viewtopic.php?t=26894 ) also did not work. I did not have the USB-UART serial adapter when setting this up, so could not debug why those were not working. I have one of those adapters now, so I might try again and see if I can make more progress on that.

I could make one for you, if you'd like to experiment and report back.

I have not been able to get it to working, unfortunately. The system hangs at "Starting kernel ..."

Using the USB UART serial console I can try things more easily now. I reduced the u-boot commands to the following, to copy-paste and run at the u-boot prompt:

Attached is a log of a boot to systemd using Ubuntu's kernel (xu4-boot-ok.txt), and of my attempt to boot with the zImage you provided and the uInitrd generated on my machine (xu4-no-boot.txt).

I'm not sure if I am generating uInitrd correctly; I have not successfully been able to run one other than the one from the Ubuntu image.
I used a command like the following (found via https://linux-sunxi.org/Initial_Ramdisk):

mkimage -A arm -T ramdisk -C none -n uInitrd -d /boot/initrd.img-5.17.3-gnu /boot/uInitrd-gnu

The file command and mkimage command show the uInitrd files appear to be the same format; but I wonder why the one I built is 5 times larger than Ubuntu's:

With zImage it appears might be something else going on. File sizes are similar:

I also confirmed that the efiboot command is not present in this u-boot build; although it's listed in the help, I suppose it was disabled at compile time. So boot via grub-efi seems to not be possible unless I can upgrade u-boot. ext2 commands are present in this u-boot.

I've been doing some further research into this and it appears that support for this hasn't been upstreamed into Linux, and the use the one from hardkernel is needed. I doubt that Trisquel's kernel will work either; it appears that the Ubuntu you downloaded contains a different kernel (from hardkernel) instead.

It may be possible to use the Linux-libre deblob scripts to clean up the odroid-specific kernel sources, although the scripts may require modification (and later use with deblob-check to verify if anything may have been missed.) But I don't think this is something I want to take on. One of my criteria to supporting something in my kernel builds is that it must be supported by upstream (GCC, Linux, etc.) and can't require out-of-tree patches.
