Trisquel on ZaReason’s Alto 3880

Hello, everyone. I posted this question over at LinuxQuestions.org, but didn’t get a response.

I’ve never used Linux before and I’m going to be buying a ZaReason Alto 3880 soon. They say they’ll put Trisquel on it, and after everything I’ve read about free versus open-source software, I think that’s the option I want, but I know there are issues with completely free software sometimes not working with a laptop’s wireless card or other parts of the hardware. Then, there’s the issue of being able to watch YouTube videos and whatnot, which, if I’m correctly understanding what I’ve read online, requires proprietary software of some kind.

ZaReason says that Trisquel works with some of their computers, and I think the Alto 3880 is one of them, but could someone explain to me what issues I might run into running that OS on that laptop?

Thanks.

Hi there! So this machine.

That intel wireless card will not work with free software (while the driver might be free, the firmware isn't). On the other hand, you can only get 3D with intel video cards, so you could ask them if they could swap the wireless card with something that works.

What does work is a good question, since manufacturers tend to use different chipsets on supposedly same models... However, you can find some pointers on http://www.h-node.org/

Welcome to free software and congratulations on actually reading up on the issues as too few people do that!

Did you have a look at the laptops available at ThinkPenguin? All of their hardware is 100% supported by free software and you should be able to get a similarly spec'ed laptop from them.

Let me add up: not only their laptops are guaranteed to perfectly work with Trisquel GNU/Linux (which can be pre-installed if you wish) but, by buying it from http://libre.thinkpenguin.com (notice the "libre"), the Trisquel project will be donated 25% of the profits ThinkPenguin makes on your purchase.

Watching youtube videos does not require non-free software, aka Adobe Flash, anymore. You can watch most of them through html5, which looks just the same as Flash. Some videos don't work with the html5 yet and they can be watched using several plugins for abrowser (Trisquels version of Firefox). One of those plugins is Greasemonkey with the ViewTube script, the other one is UnPlug. There might be more.

100% of all youtube videos are watchable, mostly it doesn't even look different from using Flash.

Right! But forget vimeo and other streaming web site. There is only youtube that works with free software. But i feel ok with this. I just don't visite web sites that doen't support free format. I encourage you to give a try to Gnu/Linux Trisquel's way of life and to be part of the solution! ;)

Flashvideoreplacer supports a number of websites. See the compatibility page http://www.webgapps.org/add-ons/flashvideoreplacer/compatibility

Ha! Half the sites you listed are for porn. Now we know where our priorities lie ;-)

Actually they are the priorities of the addon's author :P ;)

freely available porn = more relaxed men = more economical power.

That was a real sign at the anti-ACTA demos in Germany, I swear :D

That is not true. There are extensions and scripts that are free
software with which Vimeo and others websites can be watched. Linterna
Mágica [1] is one of them. There is a good article in the wiki on the
topic. [2]

It would be really great if we could get some of these into the new version of Trisquel. Ideally users shouldn't have to figure it out.

Thanks for the tips! I am going to look to answer these few questions:

Is FVR is Libre?
How can Midori can read on Vimeo since there is no html5?

Midori and Epiphany can both watch flash content via the Totem plugin by using the Linterna Magica greasemonkey script. Linterna Magica also works with Mozilla based browsers and can also be used with Mozilla browsers with GNOME MPlayer via the Gecko Media Player plugin (which can be downloaded from Ubuntu's multiverse repository).

The easiest way to watch YouTube is via the latest SMplayer which also lets you set the default quality and format. It is available via PPA and can also be used with a Mozilla add-on called ext-youtube.

FlashVideoReplacer is free software. It is licensed under the GNU GPLv3 (see for instance the bottom of this page).

Thanks for all the help, everyone. Another question: What about Grooveshark? I know it uses Flash; will Gnash or FlashVideoReplacer work on that site?

Or, alternately, is there another, similar service I can use with Trisquel?

Gnash with Abrowser doesn't work on Grooveshark... Magnatune work... a bit. Jamendo doesn't work. I didn't try with other flashs imiters...

Jamendo works perfectly without Flash/Gnash:

I recommend disable Gnash on Jamendo.

Oh man! Thanks! How come disabling gnash helps to listen music on Jamendo? Html5?

Have you noticed the Jamendo plugin in the Exaile music player (Trisquel's default)?

Listen to Magnatune in the browser without flash!

I found this on Magnatune's blog.

John Buckman said this ia a preview of a potential browser-based player for Magnatune built without flash. It uses the HTML5 Audio Element and SQLite.

It seems to have been built by a Viennese student. It looks good and allows you to listen to their catalog as a member by checking a box. This is important to listen without all of the commercials and the constant chants of "Magnatune!" which they have laid over the free previews to prevent stream ripping.

Mr. Buckman said it is "open source" as is his unfortunate habit, but I found that it is GPLv2+.

Have any of you guys used Clementine (which, if nothing else, has a delicious-looking logo)? Their site says it works with Grooveshark. But, a question: If Grooveshark uses Flash, then how can Clementine "get" the music and play it without also using Flash (or something analogous)?

I'm sure it's clear by my last question there that I'm probably in way over my head here.

Edit: Actually, I think it uses Flash.

clementine is in the Trisquel repository, so I assume it isn't dependant on Flash or anything else proprietary. The fact it works with something that uses Flash doesn't mean much, I can watch youtube without Flash too, and without HTML 5 even. I'll try Clementine out, Exaile isn't exactly my favourite program.

It does not use flash, or is Gnash compatible.

I only have Gnash installed on my netbook and Clementine works perfectly.

The Totem movie player (should probably rather be media player) has a decent plugin for Jamendo. A bit rough around the edges but good enough.

Try it!
