Trouble with CD/DVD drive - CDROM not recognized

After attempting to burn a data cdrom with Brasero, I find that it's not
recognized:

I can see with my unaided eyes that there's data on the disk, but it's
not recognized, not even when I ask Brasero to burn another image on
top of it. The drive won't recognize a commercial audio CDROM either.
This is a used Lenovo T420 on which I have not yet tried to burn a CDROM.
TQ_8 operating system. No other issues.

That might be interesting to try. But I fear this may not be an operating system problem but a drive problem. It would also be interesting to take note of the drive's behavior when putting in a disk. Listen for noises to determine what the drive is doing as components move. Do you actually hear the disk spin up once in the drive? What about the laser moving? If the sounds indicate repeated seeking then the drive is having a hard time reading the disk. Have you tried running one of those cleaning disks through it to see what happens? That once fixed a problem for me when the drive would not recognize disks. Also observe activity lights as well as the sounds.
Followup: It was indeed a hardware problem, which I solved by getting an inexpensive CDROM
drive and adjusting its bezel to permit fitting it into the drive slot. Works fine now. On
the original T420 I got a SATA internal HDD adapter and used that with a leftover ITB HDD
in place of the offending CD burner drive, which is now retired. That works fine, too, but
I strongly recommend paying attention to the boot order in the setup menu and also running
update-grub afterwards so all the drives are listed in the GRUB menu.
