Unable to Reboot After Upgrade

Hello,
I have installed Trisquel-mini on my Intel Compute Stick. It has an Intel Atom z3735f processor with Intel HD graphics and UEFI boot. I created the live USB on a windows computer using rufus and specifying UEFI boot. I installed from that live USB
I rebooted after the install with no problem.
I attempted to use the "Software Updater" but it failed, so I did apt-get update and apt-get upgrade.
I then tried to reboot but was unsuccessful. I did not get any of the typical boot / startup processes scrolling across the screen. Instead it went straight to the desktop wallpaper, then the screen went blank. I turned the computer off, turned it back on and the same thing happened.
I reinstalled Trisquel-mini and rebooted with no problem, this time did apt-get dist-upgrade but again was unable to reboot.
Could it be because of the UEFI boot process? This PC does not offer legacy boot.

The kernel may actually boot but the graphical server crashes. That is why I would first try to get a "regular" text session: type Ctrl+Alt+F1 when the boot sequence should have ended. Does it provide you a text session you can log into (with your login and your password)?
Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not give me a text session but it did enable reaching the desktop environment. Actually it seems that pressing random keys just before the point that the screen goes blank prevents the screen from going blank and brings up the desktop environment.

Well, can you try maybe the full version of Trisquel, the 1.5 gb ISO with gnome-flashback? I used it on an intel atom with 1 Gb of RAM for some time and it used to work splendidly. Maybe try that and see.
If when I reboot I press F10 which takes me to the boot menu then select Trisquel (the only option), I get the grub menu. Select Trisquel from there and it boots successfully. I can live with that.
That is pretty strange! GRUB should automatically boot that same entry. Anyway, I would at least edit GRUB's configuration to not have to press F10 whenever you boot the computer (it must be pretty annoying).
To edit /etc/default/grub (here with Trisquel's default text editor, 'gedit'; Trisquel Mini has 'leafpad'), you need administrative privileges:
$ gksu gedit /etc/default/grub
https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Simple-configuration.html#Simple-configuration describes the variables you can add/modify. To wait indefinitely on GRUB's menu, remove the definition of GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT (if there is any) and have:
GRUB_TIMEOUT=-1
Notice the absence of spaces. Save and quit the text editor. Finally execute the following command for the change to be effective:
$ sudo update-grub
I have implemented this. Now I get the grub menu automatically every time. But it also fails to progress to the desktop environment every time. However, when the desktop wallpaper appears (which occurs just before the screen goes blank) if I press F10, there is a message "scanning for btrf filesystem" and then I do see some operations scrolling down the screen and I do get to the desktop environment.
