For some reason with the 4.0 beta I'm having problems with Chinese subtitles, such as these:

Which are for this TED talk:

The subtitles display correctly in Totem (though they're white which makes them hard to read at times), but when I use mplayer which I compiled and installed they just show up as gibberish. In Trisquel 3.5 I had no problems at all.

I'm guessing that this is just a lib*-dev file or something, but I can't seem to figure out which one it might be.

Does anyone here have any idea?

Okay, I just tested out the Ubuntu 10.4 live session and compiled mplayer, still the same problem. I then installed mplayer from the repos and tested that, still the same problem.

This is a real step backwards, but it looks like I'll need to report this upstream.

Done.

This is really annoying for me as I like watching films with my girlfriend, but it's hard for her to understand without Chinese subtitles.

I'm guessing this is a problem for many other languages too.

I just discovered the problem when it comes to mplayer. It requires the -ass flag it seems. Which is silly, because I was trying to use an srt subtitle file, not an ass file.
