I want to buy this external hard drive but I have a few questions about it www.amazon.com/Passport-Ultra-Portable-External-Backup/dp/B00E055H5O/

It says it has "Automatic and cloud backup", and "Works great with Windows 8". Is the cloud backup feature a program that it installs on the computer or is it something else? Will this hard drive work on my computer with Trisquel?

Has anybody else bought one of these Western Digital hard drives before?

Please don't turn this thread into an autistic argument about the morality of using Amazon.

It looks like the My Cloud is firmware on the hard drive, which can be used as a network-attached storage device; nothing to install on your machines. It's not likely free firmware, but who knows. I suppose you can access it as a samba share from Nautilus? See this AskUbuntu thread. And, from a WD video, it looks like you can configure the device from a web interface.

I'm not recommending a device, just answering a "can I do it" question.

I have seen 6 year old children with autism that have a higher IQ than you! They are math prodigies...

and about Amazon, with need to protect it from the timber industry...

Yes, I,m a tree hugger are you?

Lembas is the reason people associate the free software movement with autistic people. I can't even ask for some help without him jumping in and acting like a complete autist. I just want some help finding a hard drive.

oralfloss dont floss your money so easily there is options.

I own 2, 500 gb internal SATA drives, that I assemble and mounted each individually in each cassing with firewire and USB 3.0 support for storage/backup or MEDIA PLAYER, no issues with those WD AT all and Trisquel. I formatted the drives and partition using triquel.

In my opnion,Is best if you could build your storage device. Is cheaper.

My storage casing was 12 dollars per, including the power supply, and 2 cables for firewire and USB 3.0.

Each drive is WD-Blue that cost me 50 dollars.

Overall, I did spend 125 dollars. Unless you are using the Notebook drives which are more expensive....but less bulky.

I want to keep all the stuff I have on my laptop now. I currently have over 500 GB of music and I keep getting more so I need to get a new drive. I don't want to go through the trouble of setting up a new internal drive. I would rather have an external one.

I'm using a thinkpad t500 right now and I think there's a limited size to the hard drive I can have internal.

Once Trisquel 7 is fully finished I might get a new internal drive though, or a new computer all together. Thanks for the help though.
