What should I remove/install to make a media center from the base Trisquel 6.0 install?

My objective: to create a working Trisquel 6.0 install with enough to play videos, view samba shares and manage files and browse the web. I could start by using the commands on http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purelubuntu , but I don't really know where to start from there. How would I install a LXDE desktop with the Lubuntu default settings?

you can install trisquel-mini?

I have found that if you install a new desktop on top of your previous one it will work if you choose the other desktop on login. Where I find that it starts failing is when you have more than 3 different desktop enviorments.

I now have trisquel-mini and I installed all the default gnome settings (including gnome-shell). This has worked for me in the past and I could choose to login as gnome-shell or lxde. But sometimes minor configurations need to be changed or .configure files need to deleted.

It uses NetWorkManager. If I remove lxde and install openbox... BAM. Internet breaks.

You can also configure your network via /etc/init.d - scripts. See here:
https://dijks.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/how-to-disable-network-manager-in-ubuntu-12-04-precise/

AFAIK the network manager does not integrate into all desktop environments.

As for your idea about a media center I would simply remove all programs not used (e.g. office, mail, etc). Then use a basic desktop environment such as XFCE or LXDE. You can add / start then XBMC via the autostart function inside the used desktop environment. I did so with Sabayon, XFCE and XBMC a while ago. Your login manager might be configured for automatic login for the corresponding user for simplicity.

If you need to do webbrowsing you simply could exit XBMC and start the browser of your choice.

Oh yes, there is one thing I forgot to add:
XBMC simply needs a running xserver. So theoretically you do not need any desktop environment at all.

(P.S. I need a Trisquel install with a lubuntu theme. I'm trying to run mythbuntu-desktop too.)

I doubt the choice of the theme is fundamental to build a media center! Anyway, you can search "lubuntu" in the Synaptic package manager and find everything you want.
