Why did GNOME leave the GNU Project?

As someone who loves GNU and GNOME, I wonder why the latter eventually left the GNU Project, GNOME was started by the GNU Project to provide a fully free software desktop and I don't understand what made GNOME leave the GNU Project since I can't find any concrete evidence of what made GNOME leave despite doing a lot of research through e.g. search engines.

Miguel de Icaza - original author of GNOME.
De Icaza was criticized by Richard Stallman on the Software Freedom Day 2009, who labeled him as "Traitor to the Free Software Community".
