Why Ubuntu as the base for Trisquel?

I think Debian will be better choice.
Because Debian much more close to ideals of FSF than Ubuntu(and others GNU/Linux distros).

If we will switch to Debian, then we will optimize our efforts.

Try gNewSense. Version 3.0 (MetaD) is based on the latest Debian Testing.

Where is gNewSense 3.0 version? I can found only gNewSense 2.3 on official site. The distro is dead.

http://beta.gnewsense.org/gnewsense-three/installer/3.0-alpha2/ has
installation media for 3.0. There were branding changes made recently,
live media are being worked on.

Many small wikis have this problem. The log shows that many such pages
are deleted. Wiki maintenance needs much different skills and knowledge
than making the 3.0 release.

"the distro is dead"

You can certainly be forgiven for thinking so. It seemed the same to me.

But we were wrong!

FWIW I feel pretty much the same vague sense of dis-ease with the idea of basing on a Canonical product. However, I appreciate that Ruben is plenty smart enough to have considered the argument, and made his decisions regardless. If it matters intensely, jump the gnewsense train. Or fork! That's the beauty of the F/LOSS. Good hunting.

My biggest fear here is Canonical's/Ubuntu's NIH syndrome, from unity to upstart to Mir. If the rest of the community sticks with standard desktops, systemd & Wayland, where will that leave Trisquel? I would rather see Trisquel follow the community than Ubuntu, but I have ZERO trust for Canonical.

Yes, absolutely right.
For a distro like trisquel with all the free-software minded base, ubuntu is not the best choice.

Concerning Gnewsense:
On the website, I only find version 2.3 which is way too old;
Thought the new version will be based on Debian Squeeze, but don't know where I read this or if it's true.

Why not? If you remove all non-free software of the most popular distribution what's the problem?

Probably is more hard to clear.

Because ubuntu goes his own way more and more; this increases incompatibility to other choices.
Think of the whole MIR story. Who knows whether one day, unity will be the only desktop environment which is able to run on ubuntu?
Looks very bad for kde at the moment; this is what I've heard.
Canonical does nasty things and it will become more and more difficult to remove those things. One day, It might be impossible, I don't know.

And it's very questionable how long ubuntu will stay the most popular distribution with their policy.

systemd is Red Hat NIH syndrome ;-)
The "standard" is upstart (2006). Since Fedora 15 Red Hat include systemd (2011) before was upstart.

Maybe we are need to ask question(s) to Trisquel developer(s)?

I am no developer. However, even though I have reservations about Trisquel forking from Ubuntu, I do believe it was a smart move to fork from such a popular distribution. At the time Trisquel was formed, Canonical did not appear as they appear now, and had not made so many moves contradictory to the community.

Canonical only choosing the "own way" (like Android) but all is free. (Unity, Mir, etc).

Mir and Unity are GPL instead of MIT of Wayland and X.

I thought the bottom line was the amount of development/testing Ubuntu has fired at it compared to Debian/sid etc. Seems to make sense to me. If Ubuntu turn components propietary or create nasty dependencies, my guess is Trisquel and it's users alike will drop it like it's hot.

From your lips to god's ears; amen. I hope your guess is right, and I hope Canonical knows it.
