Hi everybody, sorry to bother you, I had a bad experience with a Lenovo because the wifi was not free. I managed to sell it so now I am extremly careful.
So my question is, is this laptop http://www.dell.com/ch/fr/p/inspiron-15-3537/pd?oc=cn35321&model_id=inspiron-15-3537
compatible with Trisquel without problem. It seems that nobody tested it. I think that the wifi firmware is atheros but I am not 100 percent sure.
Ps : no need to tell me about thinkpenguin, but in my opinion the laptops they have are fat and ugly and expensive and heavy and small battery life. Sorry about that but I apreciate that a company promote free softwares.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Dell Computers come with Windows and Dell does not offer a Windows refund. There is no guarantee that a Dell is compatible with GNU/Linux. But there is the gluglug which comes with Trisquel preinstalled: http://shop.gluglug.org.uk/product/ibm-lenovo-thinkpad-x60-coreboot/
That's strange because in H-NODE they say that the Dell 15R-5537 is working fine A-Platinium. http://h-node.org/notebooks/view/en/1339/Inspiron-15R-5537/1/1/undef/A-platinum/2013/undef/undef/undef/undef/undef
The old 15R-5537 had atheros wifi chip dell calls it Dell 1705 so I thought that maybe that's the same wifi on the 15-3537.
I will try to ask dell but I dont think they will answer :-(

So you might be in luck.
This is a newer Atheros device.
You could have kept your previous laptop and just bought a USB Wifi adapter that Linux-libre handles. For instance from ThinkPenguin but not necessarily. I bought that one along with my latest laptop: http://www.tp-link.com/en/support/download/?model=TL-WN722N
You can do the same for your next laptop.
Best thing to do when buying laptops is just avoid Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sony, Toshiba, and Apple as you frequently can't replace the wifi cards with a compatible one due to digital restrictions on the mini pcie slot (wifi card slot) or proprietary cards.
While you still run the risk of running into other issues like defective switches (ie not supported, software based, propritary windows drivers only) for the wifi card slot it's at least cutting out the manufacturers who are known to be problematic due something we should all be boycotting (DRM).
Obviously it would be ideal to also avoid companies that force a proprietary OS on you as well... but I think I'm more in the minority here on that one.
I'd go one step farther... then even this... but you all know my obvious stance already.
I have an old Inspiron on which the wifi works withy Trisquel; if possible, just boot the live cd and try it!
If the laptop came with an atheros wifi card it'll probably work. It's that they can't be swapped for a compatible one that is the problem. If it works and you already own it by all means use it (unless you don't want to promote a company which is selling defective-by-design products anyway, but then again, nothing says you have to use it in public places either).
