When I open my music folder with mp3 files in it with PCManFM x window system crashes and throws me back out to the login screen. If I open my music folder with Files it does not crash.

Try using SpaceFM instead. It is an improved version of PCManFM.
Package: https://packages.trisquel.org/aramo/spacefm

SpaceFM works without crashing. I don't like the layout as well. Thanks for all your help.

I don't like the layout as well.
SpaceFM can be customized to look exactly like PCManFM. The 'View' menu entry.

I could not reproduce this on Trisquel Mini, neither before nor after full update. PCManFM shows all kinds of audio files in the Music folder without any complaint.

Did it start happening recently on your system, possibly after an update? What do you get if you run PCManFM from a terminal? You could try purging and re-installing PCManFM and see if the problem persists, this has been known to solve similar crashes at times, by resetting configuration files.

SpaceFM looked quite promising, but has apparently ceased to be maintained. This fork seems to be active, but you would probably need to build it from source: https://github.com/thermitegod/spacefm.

PCManFM probably doesn't like your music collection. You should probably add some death metal tracks.

There's also the 'pcmanfm-qt' package in the repo if you want to try that version instead. I don't know if there's much difference between pcmanfm and pcmanfm-qt, but they have completely different version numbers.

This is probably going to pull half of LXQt on top of LXDE.

Your suggestion to switch to symphonic viking metal sound sounds sounder.

Or more. For minimalists such as yourself, there's rox-filer in the repo, which is an impressive little file manager.

It started some time after I upgraded from trisquel 10 to 11. I tried completely uninstalling and reinstalling pcmanfm did not help.

Thanks for reporting back. This is the closest crash report I could find: "When I click (from PCManFM file manager) on a folder with a large number of media files, the folder contents are shown momentarily and then I got thrown back to lightdm greeter." -- https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=231763.

That report is pointing to a video driver problem. There happens to be a known issue with the default Xorg configuration in Trisquel 11, which affects some Intel graphics: https://trisquel.info/es/forum/x11-close-session-when-opening-file-or-browsing-web. You may want to have a look, and see if it also helps in your case.

Good, that much is sorted.

If you wish to keep using PCManFM, unchecking "Show thumbnails of files" in Edit > Preference > Display may help.

No thumbnails seems like it might be working.

Is it possible that you're experiencing the problem mentioned here?

The solution given worked for me when I had a similar problem.
