Add printer won't ask for sudo password (even if it's necessary)

When trying to add a printer with the Trisquel default GUI application, it gives an error saying that it cannot add the printer, and the same happens when running "hp-setup". HOWEVER, when running "sudo hp-setup" it will work ok, which seems to me that the problem in the GUI is that it should ask the sudo password and it doesn't (so it gives an error as it can't access the system files to register the printer.

Is hp-setup something that comes with Trisquel anyways? Looks like it can install proprietary firmware.

hplip comes preinstalled in Trisquel, and it is AFAIK the free/libre way to use HP printers.
Problem is, hp-setup works if we use sudo, but the gui facility won't ask for sudo password (and it should, just like gparted for example).

Is it a network printer or a local printer?

Try to set a root password, if you really want to log as root. In terminal type: "sudo passwd root" (without quotes). BUT, setting a root password is considered a bad idea.

Note that if sudo asked you for a password, it won't ask you again for the next few minutes. Depending on the configuration, sudo may keep a separate password delay per terminal.
