Icedove is an e-mail client distributed by the Debian project. It is based on Mozilla Thunderbird, but is made entirely of free software. With Icedove, the Debian project aims to provide a version of the Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail client which has not yet been kept in synchronization with upstream development of Thunderbird as originally planned. It removes the proprietary artwork and plug-in repositories used in the official release by the Mozilla Corporation, which are classified as non-free by free software advocates.
It makes an excellent companion to abrowser, both of them remove proprietary artwork and plugins. It would be nice if Mozilla Thunderbird was replaced by Icedove.
I second this request.
I found out in IRC today that we include a simple config file with our distribution of Thunderbird that removes the recommendation of the non-free plugins, but the mainline Thunderbird still has trademarked artwork, and is therefore not fully modifiable.
Another reason for switching to icedove is discussed in this article http://lwn.net/Articles/384828/
The article main point is: the trademark policy might prevent Fedora from shipping a working Thunderbird led to calls for rebranding the mail client (and the Firefox web browser) with different icons and names, as Debian has done.
