using mouse wheel to adjust volume crashes indicator applet

Description

When I try to adjust volume by mousing over the sound indicator and using mouse wheel (or middle button + trackpoint in my case) all icons in the indicator applet disappear and I get

'"Indicator Applet Complete" has quit unexpectedly

If you reload a panel object, it will automatically be added back to the panel'

If I select 'Reload' the indicator applet returns.

Trisquel 8.0 support ended in April 2021.
Please open a new issue in case it remains on the current supported release.
