About compton
Compton is a lightweight, standalone composite manager, suitable for use with window managers that do not natively provide compositing functionality. Compton itself is a fork of xcompmgr-dana, which in turn is a fork of xcompmgr. See the compton github page for further information.
The author of the program states his frustration about the low amount of standalone and lightweight compositors so he decided to work actively on compton until he add the features he want.

How Trisquel handles compton
Compton is launched at the start of gnome flashback (which is Trisquel's default desktop) by using the xdg autostart standards. The compton-autostart.desktop file that summons the compositor is located in /etc/xdg/autostart.
By looking inside compton-autostart.desktop, one can see that compton-launcher is executed instead of compton.
The compton package are made by the Trisquel developers themselves and they have made a series of modification and the compton-launcher script inside the package is made by them.
Disabling compton
There are more than one way to disable the effects but the most elegant is to take advantage of the compton-launcher scritp and create a file inside ~/.config/disable-compton:
$ touch ~/.config/disable-compton
