If you want to set up a new system (i.e. computer) identical to an existing one, you can simplify the process of installing the same set of packages. The aim of this guide is to illustrate how this can be done. The guide uses Trisquel as an example but this should be good with other OS. In the guide old.sys refers to the system you want to copy/clone, and new.sys to the new system, that you want to set up.

1) Export the list of packages installed on old.sys.
In Synaptic on old.sys, use the menu "File/Save Markings", check the box "Save full state, not only changes", choose the name for the file and a place for it on a removable device (e.g., a USB key).

2) Make a fresh install of Trisquel on a 'new' computer.
- with the default configuration

3) (Optional) Save download time
To save some download, you can first copy /var/cache/apt from old.sys to new.sys.

4) Import the list of packages to new.sys
Plug the removable device into new.sys, launch Synaptic there, choose "File/Read Markings" and the file on the device. The applications will then be ready to be installed. Just click the "Apply" button.

5) (Optional) Backup the user files and restore them on new.sys
For user data, you can just take them from the backup. Notice that you may only want to copy some of those data, e.g., only the personal configuration for the applications that are hidden files (i.e., files whose names start with a dot) right inside the home folder.

Thanks to its integration with the GNOME file manager (Nautilus), Déjà-Dup makes that process easy: right click in the blank part of a folder displayed by the file manager and you will see an entry to restore files from a
backup. You will probably get a message that the computer is different but I am pretty sure I have already done that (i.e., it is a warning and not an error).
