Hope everyone is doing well, just wanna make a quick post for the sake of it! Also glad to be finally using an actually FOSS distro.

Very wise. I have seen what discord looks like and it really isn't worth the spyware built in.

If you ever have time I recommend reading through their privacy policy, for such a mainstream piece of software that people use to communicate every event of their life its really scary. I still use it to talk to some friends but I only ever access it via my IRC client so that all it can harvest is the texts I send, I really hope a decent free alternative comes around soon.

Likewise! The greatest tradgedy of the modern web is the movement from decentralised websites, forums, IRC servers, etc...to centralised services like Discord. It's effectivley meant that nearly every internet user is in the clutches of big tech and that information is absolutely impossible to find because it's all to often locked behind login walls

This happens almost every day.

Me: Sees a cool new FOSS project. Opens website. "Join our community on Discord!" Closes website.

One of the biggest letdowns is GrapheneOS. So many "security" people advocate for the project, but the first thing it pushes in your face after a clean install is to join their community on Discord. There's nothing secure about it.

Trisquel's forum is great. Even though it's pretty dead for the most part - all of the information is still there and accessible to anyone who needs it.

GrapheneOS has a discussion forum at https://discuss.grapheneos.org. It apparently uses Flarum, which seems to be free software. I never used Discord and no one ever mentioned it to me. Does it really have users?

I am in some xmpp group chats and some IRC channels. You can sometimes have an immediate response, it can be used to raise some new issue quickly but it is impossible to have several discussions in parallel and to find back information provided earlier, so I really prefer web forums, no matter the tool they use.

I only remember this meme when someone says "GrapheneOS". I was told that meme was made by a Parabola user.

GraphineOS always struck me as an OS for the hyper-paranoid, yet unaware. No shade to the project itself (outside of the discord thing, that's just plain silly) as I'm not well versed in its intricacies, but the majority of the userbase seems to be advocating for its use as a daily driver. It's understandable to want a privacy respecting OS as a daily driver, but using it as such removes many of the security elements that a lot of them will talk about. Its like how you would use only use tailsOS for specific cases, since the longer you use it for the easier it is to deanonymize you. Same principle applies, especially considering how its basically impossible to escape the surveillance of cell companies outside of just not using a phone.

(Note - Not an endorsement of Tails, just fits the example.)
